Is the cutline at the Evian Championship too harsh, or does it separate the best from the rest?

The second round of the Amundi Evian Championship was suspended due to inclement weather. 66 players were yet to finish their rounds as lightning stopped play at 4.23 PM local time. They will tee off on Saturday morning when the second round resumes. But not all of them will continue through the day.

Amundi Evian Championship, like the previous three majors, follows a cut line. The top 65 and ties will make it to the final two rounds. The first major, Chevron Championship, followed the same format. However, the U.S. Women’s Open whittled down the field to low-60 and ties for the weekend. On the other hand, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship cut it down to top-70 and ties.

The relatively low scoring till the second round has moved the projected cut line to even par. At the Chevron Championship, this season’s first LPGA major, the cut line fell at 2-over. For the U.S. Women’s Open, the dividing line was at 8-over. Whereas, in the last one, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, only players at 5-over and better could slip inside the cutline.

Currently, Ayaka Furure maintains a three-shot lead on the top. The Japanese International started with three birdies and then piled three more on top throughout the day. She has yet to card a bogey at par-71 layout on the shores of Lake Geneva. While Furure thrived at the Amundi Evian Championship, a handful of big names are either outside the projected cutline or are jostling on the verge of booking a weekend spot.

Major upsets at the Amundi Evian Championship

World No.1, Nelly Korda, playing her first tournament since a dog bite forced her out of the greens, is settled near the cutline. The Florida native is 1-under with four holes left to play. Unless she cards a double bogey or worse, she will book a weekend spot for the first time since May. She has missed three straight cuts since winning the Mizuho Americas Open, her sixth title of the season.

Charley Hull, who was one of the handful of LPGA pros to make the cut at all three majors, won’t continue the streak at the Amundi Evian Championship. Hull carded 4-under through 14 holes on the second round, but her shocking 8-over opening round is hard to overcome.
