To put it simply, Yes! There is a cutline at the 106th PGA Championship! 156 players worldwide are gathered at Valhalla, but only half of the field would be allowed to play on Saturday and Sunday. Conventionally, the PGA Championship observes the cut of the top 70 and ties, and this year too, the same would be followed.

The cut made for the PGA Championship is tied with the Open Championship for being the largest among all four majors. Interestingly, the Masters has the smallest (top 50 and ties), whereas the U.S. Open has the top 60 and ties cut. Additionally, it should be noted that, like usual PGA Tour events, where players within 10 strokes of the lead also qualify, nothing of that sort is used at the PGA Championship.

The last time the 10-shot rule was used, it was at the 2020 Masters; all four majors have since shunned the rule. Nonetheless, the projected cutline for the 106th PGA Championship is even par, which means any player above it will be dismissed from the Louisville greens.

Currently, as round one ended, players at T85 like Tiger Woods (+1), Rickie Fowler (+1), Tommy Fleetwood (+1), Dustin Johnson (+2, T108), Phil Mickelson (+3, T126), and Padraig Harrington (+6, T148) are at risk of missing the 1 over projected cutline after 36 holes end. If they do not buckle up for the second round and miss many putts, they might just end up missing the third and fourth rounds.

While these players are at the bottom of the leaderboard, the top has been secured by Xander Schauffele’s historic run at Valhalla, who is on his way to ending the winless spell that has followed him since the summer of 2022.

Xander Schauffele adds his name to the history books

The world no. 3 missed his chance to win again on the PGA Tour at the Wells Fargo Championship last week when Rory McIlroy‘s zoom swooped in the last round and took his final score to 17 under. However, at the PGA Championship, Xander Schauffele is more determined than ever to break his winless streak. The 30-year-old started his round one with a par putt on the 1st hole.

If you had expected him to continue the par putt series, you would have been wrong. The seven-time PGA Tour winner shot a bogey-free round that consisted of nine birdies. Schauffele eventually finished 9 under 62 and recorded the lowest round at the Valhalla. Moreover, he also tied the record for the lowest round at any major championship with Rickie Fowler (during the 2023 US Open) and Branden Grace.

With a glorious start to his second major of the year, Xander Schauffele is expected to win his career’s nfirst major, and that too after two years of no victory in sight! It sure will be a surreal moment!
