Is the cut at the BMW PGA Championship too harsh, or does it add to the excitement?

The 2024 BMW PGA Championship is underway. The event has started with some great golf and some bizarre moments. From Robert MacIntyre’s insane hit with a driver off the deck onto the green to Rory McIlroy’s using the back of his putter to make a par and even breaking a clubhead, there has been no shortage of big moments at the event. And with the event following a regular Tour event format, plenty of more such moments can be expected.

The BMW PGA Championship format all said and done is unchanged from the previous years. The tournament started with it’s pro-am round on Wednesday, which included several celebrities, such as Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, footballer Gareth Bale, and cricketers Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes.

For tournament play, the field contains 144 professional players who will play the 72-holes. For the first two rounds, there will be a morning and afternoon wave where the field will be divided into threesomes. The trios will start either from the first tee or the tenth tee and play their 18 holes. A cut is made after 36 holes with only the top 65 players and ties proceeding to the weekend rounds.

For the third and fourth rounds, the pairings and tee times are decided per players’ scores. The pros with the highest scores will start earlier and pair up with another player closest to their score. The leaders start last.

The player with the lowest score at the end of 72 holes will win the BMW PGA Championship. He will take home $1, 530,000 of the $9,000,000 prize purse. The tournament winner will also get 1,335 DP World Tour points and exemptions into other big tournaments. And if in case there are multiple players tied for the first, the game heads into a playoff.

There are generally two types of playoff formats that are used in golf. One is the sudden-death playoff and the other one is the aggregate score playoff. In the aggregate score playoff, the winner is decided by playing multiple holes, usually the day after the final round, and whoever gets the lowest score wins.

The playoff for the BMW PGA Championship will follow DP World Tour rules. The rules stipulate that a sudden-death playoff will be held on the same day between any golfer who has qualified, i.e.: whoever is tied for first place on the leaderboard. 18 holes may be played with the players advancing hole by hole until a player scores the lowest in the group.
