No cut at the BMW Championship—Does this make the tournament more exciting or less competitive?

The penultimate event before the 2024 season’s conclusion is finally here! The BMW Championship will start in just two days, with the top 50 in the FedExCup standings after the St. Jude Championship ended last week. As the FedExCup playoffs follow a unique format, only a few will be moved from the Castle Pine Golf Club to East Lake for the season-ending event.

But is there a chance that not all golfers make it to the TOUR Championship because of the 36-hole cut? Almost all of the PGA Tour’s regular events follow the cut format; this is one of the things that differentiates the PGA Tour from the breakaway circuit. But when it comes to the three playoff events (and the five signature events), the PGA Tour cuts some slack to the top players.

And because of the limited field, the Tour will not observe any cut at the BMW Championship, the PGA Tour reports, nor was it there at the St. Jude Championship. Hence, all 50 players will have an equal chance to play on all four tournament days and recover from their mistakes to take home the prestigious BMW Championship trophy along with the hefty winner’s share of the multi-million dollar purse.

The BMW Championship becomes the most important pedestal for players to reach the season-ending event at East Lake, as only the top 30 golfers qualify to tee up at the decorated TOUR Championship and compete for a hefty purse. But that is not all that the BMW Championship offers in the top 50 field; there are also millions of dollars at stake!

What will be the payout for the BMW Championship field?

The three FedExCup playoff events of the PGA Tour offer a total of $140 million, with the TOUR Championship taking the lead with $100 million and the BMW Championship offering $20 million. This is the same amount given at the eight signature events. The winner at Castle Pines Golf Club will take home 18% of the total prize money, which comes out to be $3.6 million.

But since it is a playoff event, something has to be unique about it. And there is a specialty with the first two playoff events. Remember how at a regular PGA Tour event, the winner gets 500 FedExCup, and at signature events or majors, they amass 700 points? Well, at the BMW Championship, the winner will get a quadruple of the regular event. Yes, you heard it right. The winner will get 2,000 points to get a head start in the Tour Championship next week.
