Does Si Woo Kim's success signal a new era for South Korean golfers on the PGA Tour?

Si Woo Kim started his golf journey quite early! He has had only one teacher throughout his life: his father. Although the 29-year-old has only four victories on the PGA Tour, he has become a known South Korean pro, all thanks to his winning style. For example, Kim won the 2017 PLAYERS Championship and became the youngest winner of the historic tournament at the age of 21. Since then, Kim has won many events; the most recent was at the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii.

As Kim climbs the stairs of success on the American circuit, people are curious about him, and the question of where he comes from always arises. Is he an Asian American or a South Korean? Si Woo Kim resides in Dallas, Texas, but he is a native of Seoul, South Korea. The 29-year-old was born on June 28th, 1995, and at 17, he became the youngest player to qualify through the PGA Tour’s Q-School. Since then, Kim has been a regular on the Tour and one of the best South Korean pros.

He had been a proud countryman, and he has represented South Korea thrice in the Presidents Cup, in 2017, 2022, and 2024. He has also represented his country at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. At the latter event, the 4-time PGA Tour winner helped the South Korean team win a gold medal, and courtesy of that, he was exempt from serving in the military per the country’s mandatory enlistment.

Although he is from South Korea, because of actively playing on the PGA Tour, Kim has sort of permanently moved to the United States and started his family here. He recently welcomed his first child, but is his wife also South Korean?

Who is Si Woo Kim’s wife?

It is rare to find someone who shares the same passion for something as you do, but that’s what happened with Si Woo Kim. The 29-year-old tied the knot in 2022 a month before winning the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii—quite a lucky charm his wife has been. Surprisingly, Kim’s wife Ji Hyun Oh, is also a professional golfer who made her professional debut on the Korean LPGA Tour in 2013.

The duo met in 2014 but were only good friends initially. Their shared passion was the reason why they connected and got engaged in 2021. However, after getting married, Oh put her professional career on hold. After getting married, she once said, “I will now be Kim’s wife, rather than a professional golfer. When we were dating, we had to spend so much time apart from each other. Now that we’re married, I don’t have to worry about being away from him. This is the happiest moment of my life.”

Have an interesting take?

In February 2024, Kim and Oh welcomed their son Theo, and he has been taking them to almost every event. His wife and son made their Masters debut at the par-3 contest, and despite discontinuing her career, Oh showed that she still had the skill as she played better than her husband at the contest. With his fans’ and family’s support, Kim probably hopes to win more on the PGA Tour and make his country proud!
