Should LIV Golfers like Sergio Garcia be welcomed back with open arms or face stricter penalties?

Sergio Garcia started playing for the LIV Golf in 2023. However, that made him ineligible to be a part of the Ryder Cup event. But as it turns out, recently a waiver has been given out for such golfers. If they pay off the fines, which is the amount that was taken by them to join the breakaway league, they can join the previous league again. Sergio Garcia has officially submitted his application to rejoin the DP World Tour for the 2025 season, ahead of the deadline on Sunday, November 17, a DP World Tour spokesperson confirmed to GolfMagic.

The 44-year-old has now paid the required fines and will need to serve his suspensions before being eligible to compete again on the tour. As of now, Garcia is reinstated as a Category 1 member of the DP World Tour for the 2025 season. “Sergio Garcia has now paid his fines. He will now need to serve his suspensions before he can play on the DP World Tour, but he is a member for 2025 (in cat 1),” they said.

Well, returning to the European League means a lot of other things for Sergio Garcia. His fines were so high that it surpassed $1 million. However, by paying it back, he can finally return to playing for the European team at the 2025 Ryder Cup. Ben Parsons reported the news on his official X account and wrote, “Exclusive: Sergio Garcia has revived hopes of a Ryder Cup return by re-applying for his DP World Tour membership. He has paid his outstanding fines and will now serve suspensions before he can play again.”

While the European Team has their criteria set for the LIV Golfers, being part of the DP World Tour, as it turns out, America Captain Keegan Bradley does not mind that. However, his condition for the team is different.

The players must be members of the PGA of America

In the 2023 Ryder Cup American team, Brooks Koepka was the only LIV Golfer who made it to the field. When asked about what it meant for the LIV Golfers at the BMW Championship Press Conference, he stated that they were not eligible to be part of the team because they were not members of the PGA Tour. However, he would make them a part of the captain’s pick, if they were among the best. “I’m going to have the best 12 players, so the PGA of America… they need to figure that out if that’s the problem,” reassured the Team Captain.

The only condition that Bradley mentioned for making the Ryder Cup team is that players must be members of the PGA of America. He clarified that any potential LIV Golf players who are under consideration for the team will need to be members of the PGA. Bradley stated, “We’ll ensure that the players we consider from LIV Golf are members of the PGA if we think they have a chance to make the team.”

This makes top players like Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and others make it to the team. What are your thoughts on the eligibility criteria? Let us know in the comments section below!
