The last major of this season, the 2023 Open Championship is going to take place from the 20th to the 23rd of July in the magnificent Liverpool Golf Club. It is going to be a four-day strong game with the best of golfers, already preparing their club to be at their top-notch. This major is a dream for almost every player but not everybody gets to participate. 

This major championship also is the guardian tournament for the Scottish Open which takes place a week before, and in a foreign land. Thus, PGA Tour players who are mostly accustomed to events in the USA, never miss the chance to play in Scotland. Hence, this year the former No. 1 and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, also couldn’t resist himself and finally ended up playing and winning the event in the utmost celebrated fashion.

Does Rory McIlroy qualify for the 2023 Open Championship?

With four majors already confirmed in his name and having those secured by the age of 25, was a huge milestone for him. But this year’s performance, if kept in speculation, hadn’t been much impressive. He landed at T2 and T7 in the US Open and PGA Championship held this year. And couldn’t make the cut in the Masters Championship. Now his last hope of holding the trophy is tied with the Claret Cup. But is he even playing in the Open Championship? 

The answer to this is yes. The official page of the Open Championship has taken out a list of athletes who would be seen in this year’s game and adding to the merriment, Rory McIlroy is one of them, along with the LIV defector Bryson DeChambeau. The first ten of the 2022 Open Championship get a direct entry in the 2023 Open Championship. Thus, his position at T3 became gold in the mines. Also, his world ranking of 3, came in handy and worked for him as a boon in disguise.

McIlroy’s previous attempts at the Open Championship

When it comes to revisiting the history of McIlroy performing in this auspicious grand major, his outstanding win in the 2014 Open Championship is praiseworthy. Other than that, he had a third position last year. And ended at T46 in the year 2021.
