Can Rickie Fowler overcome his slump and prove he's still a force in the golf world?

The 2024 Sanderson Farms Championship came as a ray of hope, but alas, Rickie Fowler lost that too. As much as his unexplained absence left a void, fans were equally filled with excitement at his grand return. With high hopes riding on his comeback, fans’ expectations were sadly crushed as Fowler failed to clinch the Sanderson Farms Championship Trophy. So, does that mean Fowler didn’t play well at the championship? Not at all. In fact, he put on an impressive performance, finishing with a total of 8 under, two strokes above the cut line. As per the Sanderson Farms Championship leaderboard, he has a positioning of T16. While that’s certainly not a bad performance, it was also insufficient for what Fowler needs to revive his game.

Exactly a year ago, on July 3, 2023, Fowler claimed his sixth PGA Tour victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. While it was a thrilling moment for both Fowler and his fans, it all just faded away in a moment after his months-long hiatus from the greens. So far, 2024 has felt like a cursed year for the golfer. With a disappointing OWGR ranking of 70, Fowler now faces the uphill battle of putting everything he has into getting back in the game.

Given the seriousness of the situation and his uncertain position in the golf world, Fowler will be competing in several tournaments this year in an effort to improve his ranking.

Have an interesting take?

According to the official website of the PGA Tour, Fowler is playing in the upcoming Shriners Children’s Open, which is scheduled from October 17–20, 2024. The tournament will take place at TPC Summerlin and has a purse of $7 million.

However, as mentioned earlier, this tournament is way more than any prize money or title, as this time, Fowler’s golfing future is at stake. Several other players like Tyson Alexander, Aaron Baddeley, Paul Barjon, Austin Eckroat, and many more pros will also be joining the championship. To make things even more challenging, past champions are also returning. Notable winners like Sungjae Im (2021), Martin Laird (2020), and Patrick Cantlay (2017) will all be in the mix.

In addition to this, Fowler will also compete in the $8.5 million Zozo Championship, scheduled from October 24–27. This tournament will be held in Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club.

With both tournaments lined up back-to-back, Fowler has not just one but two chances to solidify his status in the golf world. Do you think the upcoming championship will bring the victory Fowler needs? Let us know in the comments.
