Phil Mickelson's fashion: Iconic or eyesore? What's your take on his style evolution?

“Never been a fashion guy,” claimed Phil Mickelson time and again. But to what extent is the statement true? As much as Lefty’s 2021 Master’s Tournament win was popular, Mickelson has also left behind some of his most Iconic fits.

Although Mickelson previously complained about joggers, the golfer recently shared a photo where he was wearing one. It was once again, a fully black fit. He captioned the post, “As an unfashionable 54 year old, I never thought I could pull off wearing joggers. Guess I was wrong 🤷‍♂️ Thank you @GrantHorvatGolf we both won 😂😂#forwellness #hyflyers #primo.”

With such a considerable change in his looks, let us look back at some of the controversial fits that Mickelson humored on the greens.

Phil Mickelson’s white shirt look

At the beginning of last season, Mickelson shared on his X handle some of his fashion concerns. The 6-times Major Champion wrote, “The Tour doesn’t allow shorts but does allow this week’s leader to wear joggers with ankle socks? Showing 4 inches of ankle? I’m no fashion guy, never will be, but there are some things I won’t ever understand 🤷‍♂️”

In reply to that, one of his fans shared a photo of Mickelson wearing a White shirt. A full-sleeve buttoned-up white shirt! His shirt was from Callaway, with the logo of “workday”. Along with that, Mickelson had a blue KPMG cap on with a brown-belt wristwatch.

The golfer was seen wearing a similar outfit in the 2018 Masters Tournament. Back then, he was wearing a white check shirt, a white KPMG cap, and a Callaway glove on his left hand. His outfit was in much controversy, as he appeared to wear something similar to what you may expect one to wear in the office. Playing with Woods, Mickelson received a sarcastic comment that his tie was the only thing that was missing.

Mickelson went all-black

In the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational at the Centurion Club in St Albans, Britain, Mickelson was seen wearing an all-black outfit. It was back in June 2022 when the HyFlyers captain not only had a black jersey on, but every apparel on him, from head to toe, was black. From the belt of his watch to his cap, his clothing, his shades, and even his beard – it was all black.

Although many people questioned his bizarre choice of clothing for the inauguration of LIV, the golfer had another purpose for choosing such a look. I’ve won three times wearing a black shirt. It also helps me get more aggressive, the 54-year-old said, highlighting why he chose black over other things especially when his usual outfit choices are much brighter.

However, in the end, Mickelson was not able to win the tournament despite wearing black throughout the event.

Phil Mickelson’s iconic shorts

If there is anything that Mickelson has complained about regarding golf outfits, it is the ban on shorts. When he had the opportunity of wearing one, he did not miss it. The veteran was seen wearing dark-colored shorts on several occasions. It allowed him to show off one thing that he has always talked about: his calves. That’s right, the same Calves that Mickelson once compared with Adonis.

According to ESPN, “The Tour’s policy says players must wear pants in competitive rounds. The Tour altered that policy in 2019, allowing tour pros to wear shorts in non-competitive rounds, which meant practice and pro-am rounds as long as the shorts are knee-length, tailored, and neat in appearance.”

Soon after the announcement, Mickelson shared a photo of himself wearing White shorts with a black t-shirt. And ankle socks! He wrote on his X handle, “The @PGATOUR just announced that shorts are allowed for pro-am and practice rounds. Word is they saw my Insta-structionals in shorts and felt this move needed to happen. Well played, Sir. Well played!😎”
