LIV Golf has seen a lot of controversies since its inception in 2021. Nevertheless, it has managed to stand strong despite the many backlashes the Saudi-backed league has faced. However, the question naturally arises, can the same be said for the players?
The recent developments in regard to the rulings for the official rankings have brought immense scrutiny to the major chances of golfers. Moreover, it stands to see whether the season-ending tournament would act as a breaking point of sorts for golfers such as Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, at the LIV Golf event in Jeddah no less!

In an unfortunate ruling of sorts, it was decided that the OWGR would not be awarding points for the LIV Golf Series due to the different format and not enough guaranteed promotion and relegation of players. And amidst these hapless circumstances, the league would be looking to end their regular season with the tournament in Jeddah.
The decision would have come as a surprise for the LIV golfers, who were in hopes to get awarded points based on their performance in the Saudi-backed league. However, their desires were crushed along with any future major hopes as the OWGR points are vital in qualifying for the same.
And the reverberations of these conclusions would prove to be the loudest during the Jeddah event. The tournament was already of extreme importance for the players, who were looking to boost their chances of winning the finale in Miami. Moreover, some players including Koepka’s younger brother, Chase Koepka, were already in a dicey situation owing to the ‘Drop Zone’ situation.

A lot of golfers would find themselves in an unfavorable situation owing to the OWGR decision. Players like DeChambeau, who already lost out on the Ryder Cup due to the rankings, as per Zach Johnson, are in danger of losing their major chances. And he did not keep mum!

DeChambeau has had a wonderful year in the PIF-funded league with two wins, the latest coming off from the event in Chicago a while back. The golfer was not surprised with the decision as he mentioned how the ruling was “on par with how things have gone the past few years.”

However, the professional was quick in providing a solution as he said, “Giving us spots based on how we finish during the season should be the answer.” Nevertheless, it stands to see whether anything will change once the details of the merger are completed but as of now, there is no chance for any of the LIV Golfers who hoped to get awarded points in the OWGR.`
