Did you know Nike made golf clubs too, before becoming a brand that only sells apparel and shoes? The brand stepped into the golf business back in 1986 and gained prominence in 1998. After eighteen years of being in business, on August 3, 2016, Nike made a shocking announcement that it would cease the production of golf equipment, a decision driven by the declining sales and profitability of its golf division. The $186.57 billion company had faced increasing difficulty competing with established brands like Titleist and TaylorMade.
In 2016, Nike’s golf business reported approximately $700 million in sales, grappling with stagnant or declining annual figures. Although Nike had been involved in the golf industry since 1984, it only introduced its first golf clubs in 2001, starting with the Nike Forged Blades irons and followed by the Pro Combo irons in 2002. Sales reached a peak of nearly $800 million in 2013 and 2014 but ultimately struggled to maintain momentum. While it has already been so long, the clubs must have become non-existent on the greens right? Not really!

The Nike Vapor Fly Pro 3-Iron made its way into Brooks Koepka’s bag in approximately 2016, and he has rarely removed it from his setup over the years. Like at the 2020 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, he replaced it with TaylorMade’s P790 3-Iron. However, it appears the American has kept it in his bag for the past couple of years, and is still sticking by it. The LIV Golf 2025 season is also set to begin in just a few months from April 4 with Miami, and he still uses the same club.
Jonathan Wall from Golf Digest recently even shared a few pictures of his club on his official X account. He reported, “If you’re a gearhead, the following photos will blow your mind. @LukeKerrDineen was chatting with Brooks Koepka recently and the convo turned to his Nike Vapor Fly Pro 3-iron. Koepka is one of a select few still carrying a Swoosh club. But here’s where the story gets wild. Koepka reveals he’s still playing the ORIGINAL 3-iron — as in the one from his days as a Nike staffer. Koepka not only won’t test any others, he refuses to replace the shaft. Those are literal chunks missing from the graphite.”
The Golf Digest Editor asked Koepka if he was worried about the face of the club caving in. To which, the LIV Golfer stated that he does not know about it, and does not care. To this, LKD wrote, “What a maniac.”

Well, the Nike irons have indeed been a cult favorite for a long time, and except few players, they have almost become extinct.
Tony Finau parts ways with his Nike Vapor Fly
Tony Finau was a Nike staffer till August 2016. Like many former Nike players, Tony Finau initially became a free agent after Nike exited the golf equipment business. However, he soon chose to sign with Ping and has remained with the brand ever since. Interestingly, until February 2024, he had the Nike Vapor Fly Pro-3 iron in his bag, along with his Ping Blueprints. It was just last year that he gave up the club.

Golf Digest even asked him about his long-term attachment to the club in an interview. “My original lasted me about six years,” he said. “So with my math, if this one lasts me six years, and my other backup lasts me another six years, I’ll be about 50 years old by the time I’m done using both. It’s a great club. It’s one I’ve had in the bag since 2015, and I don’t think it’s going anywhere, anytime soon. I hit it great.” They have helped him bag six PGA Tour victories, and the desire to not part with them was a given. How did you like the Nike Vapor Fly? Let us know in the comments section below!
