Even before the new schedule starts, the predictions for the Ryder Cup always begin, and similar predictions have begun to take place for the 2025 edition. After the initial seven events of the PGA Tour, a new storyline has started to take shape. Insiders and critics have already begun to share their predictions. But, is this really how things work in golf? Well, the real answer will be revealed once the Ryder Cup takes place after seven months.

However, for some critics, what stands out are the winners of the current events and the continent they will be representing at the Ryder Cup. Be it Sepp Straka who won the American Express, or Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Aberg who won the last two events. All from the European Continent. However, the U.S. did manage to strike in between with Harris English, who won at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Kyle Porter took a jab at the American team in a post, writing, “Looking for some competition at Bethpage.” Predicting the winner by just a handful of events isn’t fair, even Michael S. Kim has replied writing, “Peaking too soon.” However, not only him, but Dan Hicks has also joined in to share his thoughts for early predictions.

Recently at the 5 Clubs podcast, Hicks joined in as a guest. He was asked, “Luke Donald, Dan they are bringing dude and they’re not scared I think that that’s an early storyline do you not?” Similar to Kim, he also answers by focusing on, “I think it’s an early storyline. I think you nailed it.” Continuing further, he shared his extensive experience of covering the Ryder Cup as a journalist. He said NBC started covering in 1991 and Hicks’s first was in 1993.

But for him, “We are still a long way away,” from predicting the future event. As the Ryder Cup tees off in the September-October months, the stats proved when he shared how the game can be brutal even after having the best month. He said, “You can be playing well and then a week or two later you can be trying to find it again.” The best example can be derived from the recent performance of Jordan Spieth, who recorded a T4 finish at the Phoenix Open. Later at the Genesis, he missed the cut.

Even though the majority of the golf world is looking at the winner of the tournaments, the history of the Ryder Cup has a different story to narrate

Ryder Cup head-to-head compared

The early judgment of a winner based on early wins might not be entirely correct to assume, as there have been some close margin losses from players. Also to note, team US has dominated the Ryder Cup since 1927. Out of the 44 matches played, the US won 27. Whereas Great Britain, Ireland & Europe have won 15. The vast difference in the win percentage is proof of how despite the current standing, the match result could be the opposite.

However, for the last 10 editions, Europe has been dominating the event with 7 wins, whereas the opposite US has won three events with has last victory in 2021.
