Despite the gaffe, or perhaps because of such authentic moments, the event outperformed both LIV Golf’s CW broadcast and NBA/NHL games. However, the story of the viewership has become more complex in recent weeks. Without Woods or McIlroy in action, Week 3 saw numbers plummet to 682,000 viewers, a concerning 32% drop. While the league bounced back to 864,000 viewers in Week 4 during a Woods-McIlroy playoff thriller, the recent Presidents Day triple-header delivered some of the league’s smallest TV ratings to date: 347,000 (ESPN), 377,000 (ESPN), and 357,000 (ESPN2) average viewers, respectively.

As TGL grapples with these fluctuating numbers, a Golf TV panelist may have identified the only thing lacking that could help stabilize the league’s viewership and enhance its innovative format. “The only thing that they’re lacking right now is the fact that the on-site audience can’t hear the broadcast, can’t hear the players,” a Golf TV panelist revealed, offering a surprisingly straightforward fix for the league’s engagement issues.
“There’s a disconnect between the liveliness of the audience and the liveliness of the play itself. I think once that is connected, then I think they’ve got a winner.” The significance of this observation extends beyond mere audience comfort. TGL has pioneered a unique fusion of esports technology with traditional golf. The attempt is laudable. They are aiming to creating a never-before-seen format where simulator-driven tee shots combine with live short-game action. “They took a massive risk in basically combining Esports Tech with a functioning Sports league,” the insider noted, emphasizing how this groundbreaking venture demands a seamless blend of virtual and live experiences.
At the SoFi Center, this disconnect becomes particularly evident in real time. Television viewers experience everything.-from player banter during shots to strategic discussions between teammates and expert commentary breaking down the action. The on-site audience, however, misses these crucial elements that make modern golf broadcasts engaging. While they witness the physical action, they’re cut off from the rich narrative and strategic insights that the broadcast audience enjoys, creating two distinctly unique experiences of the same event.
TGL has already demonstrated its willingness to evolve and enhance the viewer experience. The introduction of the “hammer rule”—strategic mulligans that add excitement to matches—shows the league’s commitment to innovation. “It’s clearly a success so far to this point,” the insider emphasized, “but they need to keep iterating and tweaking things that pop up.” Now, bridging this experiential gap between on-site and broadcast audiences could be the key to creating the electric atmosphere that live sports traditionally thrive on—potentially translating into more consistent viewership numbers across all broadcasts.
While TGL works on enhancing its viewer experience, the challenge of maintaining consistent viewership numbers isn’t unique to the innovative league.

Golf’s broader viewership challenges rears its ugly head
The concerns about viewership extend far beyond TGL’s innovative format. The PGA Tour has been grappling with significant rating challenges, having experienced a 3% drop in viewership during the 2024 season. 2025 brought even more concerning signs—the American Express final round drew just 232,000 viewers on Golf Channel, marking a dramatic 56% decline from 2024’s 534,000 viewers and a 40% drop from 2023’s 391,000 viewers.
The challenges have been particularly evident in regular tour events. The 2025 season opener, The Sentry, and subsequent tournaments hit historic viewership lows, with multiple factors contributing to the decline. Star power deficiency has played a crucial role, as evidenced when top players like Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele skipped the 2025 American Express, directly impacting viewer engagement.

However, there have been recent bright spots, particularly in signature events. The 2025 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am drew 3 million viewers. While the Genesis Invitational attracted 3.4 million viewers, marking a 5% increase from 2024 and becoming the most-watched non-major since the 2024 Players Championship. These improvements suggest that while golf faces viewership challenges across formats, innovative solutions, like addressing TGL’s audience-broadcast disconnect, combined with strategic event planning, could help turn the tide.
