It’s difficult not to picture Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy celebrating the sensational launch of their creation, TGL, drawing in 3.3 million views for its debut—a number that would leave even experienced broadcasters green with envy.

The Bay Golf Club defeated the New York Golf Club 9–2 at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, to begin the much-anticipated TGL. At a star-studded affair inside the SoFi Centre, the TGL got off to a great start in the main. A well-known musician and personality who has recently joined the golf profession, DJ Khaled, made a big presence during the inaugural TGL event in 2025. Former PGA Tour pro critiques DJ Khaled’s TGL appearance

Despite the TGL’s triumphant launch, which drew 3.3 million viewers, former PGA Tour pro Smylie Kaufman criticized Khaled’s participation in his “TGL Debut Recap” on The Smylie Show. Though he acknowledged that he was generally impressed with the TGL, he also believes that a major area for betterment is how we, the viewers, can hear the conversations between golfers.

In the first TGL match, ESPN’s Marty Smith spoke with DJ Khaled in the middle of the game. The interview, which was intended to be entertaining, was criticized for its planning and execution. The segment was “clunky,” according to Kaufman, and could have been improved, suggesting that it disrupted the flow of the event. In terms of player relationships, he made one suggestion for enhancement. “I thought it was cool, right? Like, I’d watch it again. I want to see all the teams,” Kaufman remarked. “My one initial bit of feedback, like I want to see improvement on is I think the banter of the mics, it’s really hard because it’s a lot of voices but it would be cool to get the best of what is said. Like I know that’s hard to do but the way it was produced, I really was impressed, except the DJ Khaled interview was a little clunky.” 

During the interview, Khaled boasted about his golf prowess, comparing himself to Woods. He said, “It was incredible,” to Smith. “First of all, I don’t know if they’re going to play the highlight, but I nailed all my putts, right? I hit a great, great drive. And then my putts, my play, the one that went down the hill with the no look. And then, ohh, I was inspired by Tiger Woods on that one.”. Fans on social media, however, seem to have expressed concern with Khaled’s interview, with many voicing their disapproval about having to listen to DJ Khaled’s speech instead of watching the game infuriated them. DJ Khaled’s intervention during Aberg’s interview

The surprise interview with DJ Khaled took place during a heated time when Ludvig Aberg was taking a shot on the green in the match between the two TGL teams. @NUCLRGOLF posted the video on their X account with the caption, “DJ Khaled interview,” in which the host was seen questioning Khaled about his time performing in the venue a few weeks prior. Khaled shared his insights with the golf community following his on-course experience, saying, “If you’ve got confidence, you’re unstoppable,” suggesting that all it takes to be successful in the game is confidence.

Fans, however, were not pleased to discover they had to listen to DJ Khaled’s talk instead of seeing the action. “Please leave!” said @BlueStreakNGC. Khaled is the Taylor Swift of golf, implying that DJ Khaled is attempting to be similar to what Taylor Swift does when she supports her partner Travis Kelce at NFL stadiums. @JohnnySandbag suggested that Khaled is making a fool of himself by attempting to share his knowledge at a golf event, asking, “Does he know everyone is laughing at him?” Khaled’s over-involvement in the game between The Bay Golf Club and New York Golf Club was something fans didn’t appreciate.
