She won her first major, the US Women’s Open, on July 9, 2023. She made it happen just two years after turning pro. Yes! Allisen Corpuz clinched the win last year by beating Charley Hull by three strokes with a 9-under overall score. This year, the 26-year-old will be ready to defend her championship title at Lancaster Country Club. The prestigious tournament is set to take place from May 30 to June 2.

Adding to the excitement, Corpuz recently recounted a hilarious and unexpected moment after the final hole during her first major win. She divulged the incident ahead of the 2024 US Women’s Open and boasts the highest prize on the LPGA Tour of $12 million.

“There was a lot of emotion walking up 18,” recalled Corpuz, knowing she would be the one to lift the coveted title. Her caddie, Jay Monahan, talked with her and told her just to enjoy the moment, “Like, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” After putting the final hole the moment became emotional as she stated, “He (Jay) said congratulations and, um, it felt pretty unreal at the time, and I think I just immediately started crying.”

“So what I told him was like, Oh my gosh, I am such an ugly crier and I can’t believe everyone is seeing that,” said the pro golfer laughingly while remembering how she must have looked crying in front of all those people. Sharing another moment before the winning hole, she humorously added, “For a very brief second I did think, you know, if I miss it, it’s okay,” with a funny chuckle, “I’ll have another shot at it, but no, I hit the first one probably a little too hard. The adrenaline definitely got me there.”  She shot 3-under par in the final round to become the first American to win the major since Brittany Lang in 2016.

Her win was a very emotional moment for her. Her parents and her boyfriend, Daniel Eckstorm’s parents, flew to Pebble Beach to see her perform. She revealed that there were just a lot of hugs and tears. The win is even more special to her now that she has had time to soak it in.

Corpuz’s stats are impressive when it comes to taking on tough courses. This year, so far, she has made the cut in 9 out of 10 tournaments she has played in. Her game is not only the result of her efforts but her team’s efforts too, especially her bagman. Since teaming up in January 2022, he has become a trusted advisor and closest confidant. These two have formed a bond that goes beyond the fairways, so she did not forget to praise him after her maiden major win.

The importance of her caddie in her title win

After clinching the 78th US Women’s Open, she spoke about how Jay, Jennifer Kupcho’s husband, has played an important role in her success. The golfer said, “He’s just really calm, and I think he knows what to say in the right moments for me, especially since we’ve been working together for about a year and a half now.”

Corpuz added praise for her caddie’s golfing skills and how of a role model he is to her by saying, “He was a pretty solid player on his own, and obviously married to Jennifer Kupcho. I think she gives him some advice to pass on to me. He has some advice for me. Has always felt like an older brother to me.”

The recalled memory of the important experiences in the event showed a glimpse of her candid and light-hearted side. Will she be able to repeat the feat by winning the Harton S. Semple trophy, as she did during her previous outing at the Lancaster CC? Stay tuned to find out!
