Does Jordan Spieth's hiatus show a new trend of athletes prioritizing family over career?

The 2024 season for Jordan Spieth was an all-the-way trip to the bottom of the leaderboard. The 31-year-old did not win any tournament, let alone card more than three top 10s in the PGA Tour’s FedExCup season. Unfortunately, the 3-time major winner ended his season at the St. Jude Championship as he didn’t qualify for the top 50. The culprit behind Spieth’s fallen form? The ulnar nerve damage on his right wrist.

For the last two years, the 13-time PGA Tour winner has been struggling with his wrist but instead of the surgery, he took the path of resting and recovering. Which ultimately did not work as Spieth went through a procedure in August 2024 and took a break from the FedExCup Fall season of the PGA Tour. So, what has he been up to these days? Making an appearance at the Crush It! Cup, a young tournament fundraiser at the Brookhaven Country Club, Spieth perfected his game,  he also talked about the merger. Moreover, he revealed at the press conference that he has been spending more time with his children.

He said, “I’m loving being a dad. It’s cool to have this time during the day with my kids too, you know. I can do half of what I can normally do.” He enunciated that even though he is an active dad in his children’s lives, and they move with him almost every week, he rarely takes breaks and usually plays golf. But his injury had pushed him to spend more time with his family and given him a new perspective. Spieth added, “I have a new respect. I should say I have a massively increased respect for moms and single parents and stuff.”

Spieth agreed that it was tough work and to do that day in and day out, he got the firsthand experience of how it is to raise two kids. Yet, he expressed, “It is the most rewarding work that there is.” And if not for golf, Spieth does love spending time with his children and wife. After all, they were behind the injury at first.

How was Jordan Spieth injured?

Jordan Speith’s wrist injury was not the result of a heavy grunted swing or slipping down a couple of stairs and landing on his twisted wrist. But it was three incidents that made his wrist unplayable. The first was in May 2023. As he got time to play with his son, Sammy, Spieth was going all out to have fun but during the playtime, the 3-time major winner injured his wrist. He opted to not go through surgery.

Spieth could still take the swings albeit with a little pain, but he believed rest would heal it. It did not. Then, in another one of his breaks, the 13-time PGA Tour winner reached out for a toaster in his home to make his son breakfast. But he thought he was supporting the wrist which he wasn’t and then got the ulnar nerve damage diagnosis. The wrist was worsening with every passing moment, but at the RBC Heritage, all hell broke loose.

Have an interesting take?

While taking a bunker side shot, his tendon popped out, and Spieth was contemplating a withdrawal. However, he pulled through that event and played twelve, even after that. That’s why his performances dropped, but now Spieth has gone through the procedure and will be healing off the course to make a return on January 1st, 2025. Meanwhile, he would be spending more time with his family and cherishing it all.
