Has Tyrrell Hatton officially surpassed Phil Mickelson, or does Lefty still have some magic left?

He was the face of the Saudi-backed league when it launched in 2022. But now, it’s as if the golfer has been sidelined. Yes, part of it falls on Phil Mickelson himself, since he just boasts three top-10 finishes throughout the three seasons. Worrisome? Many would agree, especially if you compare him with Tyrrell Hatton, a professional who teed off in the circuit on February 2, 2024, 604 days after ‘Lefty’ did!

Mickelson has raked in a total of $7,292,648, as per a report shared by the National Club Golfer at LIV. It seems like a good amount. Well, wait till you hear Hatton’s. The Legion XIII member, interestingly so, boasts an earning of $14,630,594, more than double what the skipper has.

How did he quite possibly manage that, despite joining almost two years later than Mickelson? The answer is quite obvious, to be frank. Over the 2024 season, Tyrrell Hatton brags seven top-10 placements out of 13 starts, three of which are podium finishes, including a win at the Nashville event.

Just the $4 million from the win, coupled with the $1.5 million for his T3 at Andalucia and the $1,583,334 from the tied T2 at the U.K. tournament, brings his total close to the Lefty’s numbers. The rest of the winnings easily help him sideline the 54-year-old in terms of dollar bills won during the events.

But if you’re worried about the 6-time major champ, then let us stop you right there! The Englishman had received a remarkable figure of $60 million as a signing bonus to join LIV Golf. Mickelson, on the other hand, had received a whopping $200 million as the signing fee to join the Saudi-backed league. It was surprising, to be honest, especially since he was one of the first golfers to do so while promoting the circuit. Anyway, he carded a sum double of what he got in the PGA Tour!

Phil Mickelson and his overall PGA Tour earnings

Phil Mickelson turned pro in 1992, and during his time on the American Tour, raked in a whopping $96,685,635 in career earnings on the PGA Tour. The golfer stands just below Tiger Woods, who boasts a figure of $120,999,166 as prize money winnings in his career. But that is just on the Jay Monahan-led circuit.

Have an interesting take?

If he is to beat Tyrrell Hatton this time around, then the 45-time PGA Tour champ will have to pick up his game and prove himself in the upcoming games. Especially since he hasn’t had the best of seasons in 2024. What do you think? Do you feel Mickelson will make a comeback in the future? Well, his fans would certainly hope so!
