Rory McIlroy assesses his golf game ahead of ranking title
The 33-year-old made the remarks after the conclusion of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, where he registered a 16-under par. While he finished in fourth place, it was enough to take home the crown of the DP World Tour ranking title.
McIlroy took questions from reporters at the post-match press conference. Among those, he was asked about his progress since being enthroned as the golfer of the decade in the previous decennary.
“You were golfer of the decade at the end of 2019 and when I chatted to you at that time you said you thought you could take your game to the next level in the next decade. Do you feel like you’re on that journey now, because it looks like you’re playing well in all departments?” McIlroy was asked.
In response, a confident McIlroy gave out his verdict of how “complete” he was in his golf game. “Yeah, I think one of the things I’m really proud of over the last few years is I don’t feel I have to rely on one aspect of my game,” he said. He also spoke about experiences when his driving game wasn’t at its peak, his putting would bail him out, and vice versa.
“I think if my driving isn’t there, then my putter bails me out. If my putter isn’t there, my iron play bails me out. I feel like when you get to this level, it’s like, okay, how can you make those incremental improvements to get better, and I think my goal has been to just become a more complete golfer and I feel like I’m on the journey to doing that.”
“But I definitely – I’m as complete a golfer as I feel like I’ve ever been, and hopefully I can continue on that path,” he claimed.
