With Masters just around the corner, Couples was interviewed on Monday after a practice session. He spoke about how he would love to be paired with the LIV Golfers, how he supports LIV defectors playing in the Masters, and how he thinks Champions Dinner 2023 would be. The 1992 Masters winner was also seen defending his comments on Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson.  

Fred Couples defends his “clown” comment on Sergio Garcia

Fred Couples was invited as the guest speaker during a PGA Tour Champions breakfast event in California last month. During the event, the Couples said a lot of things about the Saudi-backed league and LIV Golf Defectors.

Couples had some serious comments about Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia and bashed them for joining LIV Golf. Couples did not shy away from expressing his opinion about the duo.

He explicitly called Garcia a “clown,” and now he was seen defending his comment. “On my (radio) show I’ve told everyone Sergio is one of the top 10 players I’ve ever seen hit a ball but if he’s going to make comments about the Tour I play, I’m going to make a comment back and if it’s offensive I apologise, but they’re on another Tour.” Couples, mentioned that he has nothing against Garcia, but he would hit back at anyone who would comment on the Tour he plays. 

The 63-year-old former number 1, also said that he respects all the golfers out there.  He is also a golfer, and LIV Defectors do not bother him.

Former Masters Champion, Fred Couples will love to be paired up with Mickelson

Upon asking what Couples thought of the LIV Golfers’ participation in the Masters Tournament 2023, he mentioned “I think they deserve to be here. They should be here,” He mentioned that he thinks Phil Mickelson is a great player and truly one of the bests, and he would love to be paired up with him.

I would love to be paired with Phil. He’s one of the best players who’s ever played, loves this place as much as I do and if we did we’d look at each other on the first hole and we’d have a good time.”
