If Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau ever tee off at the Ryder Cup, expect it to be a one-club challenge. The two LIV Golf captains appeared jovial as they teed up for a 9-hole match that prompted Sergio Garcia to issue a Ryder Cup challenge to his American peer. That’s despite their current professional allegiance coming in their way of taking part in the patriotic battle.
DeChambeau has taken the off time to play ‘friendly’ matches against his rivals on the LIV Golf. Earlier the eight-time PGA Tour winner challenged Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, both captains of their respective LIV Golf teams, HyFlyers GC and RangeGoats GC. This time, it was Garcia’s turn.

Bryson DeChambeau drove down to the veteran golfer’s Texas home and had a fun 9-hole one-club duel. The Spanish pro challenged DeChambeau ahead of the game. “If I beat you, next time we play in Ryder Cup, we’re playing with one club.” Crushers GC shared it on their social media handle earlier. After the match ended, Garcia was quick to remind the 30-year-old of the challenge by sharing the same on his Instagram story.

The Spaniard laid down the rule pretty early. They would only use a putter only when the ball is on the greens. Otherwise, it’s the ‘utility’ club they picked for the drives, approaches, and wedges. Interestingly, the Spaniard used the 5-iron. The Crushers GC, on the other hand, chose the 7-iron from his arsenal for the duel.
In the 9-hole strokeplay, the veteran golfer prevailed over the American pro, after going two up in the first two holes. The match was effectively decided on the first two holes as they both tied on each of the next five holes. The ten-time Ryder Cupper, once again, tied in the final 9th hole, to win over Bryson DeChambeau.
Notably, the two met at the Whistling Straits, during the 2020 Ryder Cup. DeChambeau edged past the Ryder Cup legend, knocking a 3&2 victory during the final day Singles on his way to a record-breaking 19-9 victory. Although Garcia challenged the American pro for a one-club duel in the Ryder Cup, it looks very unlikely to ever come to pass.

Bryson DeChambeau, on the other hand, can certainly hope to wear the US cap again at the patriotic showdown. For the 30-year-old, the chance might come as soon as the next Ryder Cup in 2025. PGA of America doesn’t consider LIV Golf to be a bar in selecting the players for the Ryder Cup team. Brooks Koepka, the Smash GC Captain, received the captain’s nod and teed up at Marco Simone.
