LIV Golf’s inaugural season in 2022 garnered quite a lot of attention, some of it was bad, and some of it was not so bad. Many players defected from the PGA Tour or DP World Tour to play for the Saudi-funded league, and all of them faced repercussions for their decision. The PGA Tour banned the golfers from the events, and European golfers got engaged in a lawsuit with the European PGA Tour. 

There is one such English golfer who faced the dire consequences of his decision. Though he is enjoying his time playing in LIV Golf, but with the Ryder Cup approaching, it seems that he is missing his days in the gold and blue uniforms. Well, this is the story his recent uncanny comparison tells!

When Ian Poulter defected from his original tour to LIV Golf, he became the recipient of a lawsuit from the DP World Tour, which eventually ended poorly for the European golfers. The 47-year-old lost his DP World Tour membership, and in the aftermath of this, the golfer was no longer eligible to be a part of the European team for the Ryder Cup.

Poulter has a great Ryder Cup legacy and with the 2023 edition approaching, the golfer is reminiscing his old days in the process, he made a staggering comparison between his present league, and the prestigious Ryder Cup, as reported by Mirror

The 3X PGA Tour winner spoke that LIV golfers “absolutely thrive” on the team format and vibe of the breakaway league. He referred to the Saudi league as a “mini Ryder Cup” because of the “sort of community type feeling amongst all the players and all the team members, and the team staff.”

Ian Poulter is not the only player who has drawn a comparison between the Ryder Cup and LIV Golf on the basis of a similar team format. Just some days ago at the Bedminster event, Phil Mickelson did the same thing and said that LIV golfers’ team dynamic has helped them grow a lot. He also said that LIV golfers will bring a lot to the table if given a chance in the Ryder Cup.

Poulter not only drew the comparison, but also talked about his golden days at the Ryder Cup, and expressed his desire to be a part of it in the future.

During his interview at the Asian Tour International Series event at Close House, he also shared about his past Ryder Cup presence. He shared that he has been a part of 7 tournaments, and he was vice-captain for one of those. Talking about his love for the format, he said, “I have such a passion and a love for the Ryder Cup. I’m comfortable that I did a good job.” He also said that throughout the 7 tournaments he played in, earned a lot of points for Team Europe, and brought the trophy home five times.

The English golfer then went ahead and expressed his desire to be a part of the European team in the future, if not as a player, but either as a captain or vice-captain. He said that he would love to be a guiding figure for the young golfers on the “stressful” and “demanding” days.
