Can Amy Yang's newfound confidence lead her to another victory at the BMW Ladies Championship?

“I am so grateful and very, very happy to win a major,” South Korean golfer Amy Yang said after winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June 2024. Why wouldn’t she be? This was her first major. On the eighth hole on Sunday, she stuck her approach to seven feet, the closest of anyone in the field. The show concluded with her winning by three strokes. Yang also bagged the win at the 2023 CME Group Tour Championship and is now all set to make a significant comeback at the 2024 BMW Ladies Championship.

Last year, she finished with a disappointing T48 finish. As she is about to enter the field, Yang confessed the pressure she felt after winning the championship held at Tiburón Golf Club at the Ritz-Carlton Naples in November. At the post-round presser at Busan in South Korea, Yang was asked how she felt after entering the championship with so many changes in a year. After my win at CME, a lot of people kept asking me when I was going to win a major, and I would be lying if I said I did not feel the pressure.”

Nonetheless, she shifted her focus to taking small steps. She participated in the Paris Olympics and became one of the four players who tied for fourth place on 6-under 272. However, according to her, she lacked consistency. Having joined the LPGA Tour in 2008, she saw success 5 years later in 2013 when she won the LPGA KEB-HanaBank Championship. She soon started winning more, and saw a brief halt after the 2019 Honda LPGA Thailand win, as her next victory didn’t come until 2023. So, yeah, the pressure was indeed real, and to be on the Tour for so long without a major is just added external pressure.

The lack of consistency forced her to shift her main goal to rectifying and working on her weaknesses rather than being confident about getting back into the winning circle; “I’m trying to be modest, looking forward to the future, and taking it one step at a time,” added the Korean golfer. Yang now has a sponsor too, which she didn’t have in 2023, and hence her hat was without any logo. She had a smiley logo on her hat last year, but this year, she has been spotted wearing a bucket hat by CustomInk. She often sports Martine’s clothing when playing on the greens.

Although she has failed to give her best performance after grabbing the victory in June, it looks like Yang is all fired up to go on to win the BMW Ladies Championship on home ground.

Amy Yang has a new hobby: rock climbing at the gym. However, this made her suffer from a tennis elbow in her left arm. She lost distance as it hurt too much to get through the ball. As a result, she appeared in 20 events in 2022 and missed cuts in six of them, grabbing only $439.1K. While the 2023 season did end with a banger, the beginning was not the same. She missed four cuts and earned only $3.2 million, despite her win at the Tour Championship.

The South Korean golfer had almost lost her faith in the game and considered retiring. But it was her major win that brought her back with confidence. I can see I can still do this if I keep at it. For this event, because we still get to play in Korea once a year in front of friends and family, I will do my best,” she said.
