What a wonderful thing it would be if you were able to achieve your dreams. Well, it is something that is not very common to observe, but golf has had some instances where it became a reality. Jim Nantz, a CBS sports commentator, has witnessed it in his long career after joining back in 1985. The 65-year-old has been a golf player since his high school days.
At the University of Houston, Jim Nantz played on the Cougars men’s golf team but chose to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Radio and Television Broadcasting. He roomed with Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister, and he and Couples often talked about their aim, which was achieved in 1992. Nantz really understood the assignment.
During his chat on the ROXO Media House podcast, hosts Coach P and Lance Barrow brushed over Couples’ 1992 Masters win, asking, “What did that mean to you?” Immediately on a throwback loop, Nantz mentioned how both practiced a couple of times with the vision of Freddy winning the green jacket one day. Remembering the days they manifested coming to reality, he shared that despite the practice, “It was heavy stuff coach, I’ve gotta tell you it was heavy. I did not know I could get through it.”

Further, it wasn’t only him, but even Couples was vulnerable at that time. Recalling the 17th hole when Raymond Floyd fell behind, Jim Nantz expressed, “I was a little panicky.” He was then caught off guard by a question from his colleague Ben Wright, who asked, “Did you see this day coming?”
Even though they did, the dream coming to reality made him “garbled the answer.” But then he prepared himself to witness the early days of practice come live as Freddy won the green jacket with his 1992 Masters title. However, continuing with the standard interview, Nantz did bring tears to Fred Couples’s eyes by asking a personal question.

Jim Nantz’s personal question at the 1992 Masters
Who knew trading birdies for broadcast scripts would make him the voice of golf? Despite the fumble when hit with the dream, Nantz continued to do his job with the standard question after Fred Couples won the Masters. However, the urge to not regret asking a personal question let him jump into the early days of the duo.
He asked, pointing out the names of the batch mates, “We all said, someday you’re going to be wearing the green jacket.” The remainder of college days and the early dream let the golfer turn his head and hide it with a hand, murmuring.

Nantz shared that the question left him choking as he ran out of sentences and didn’t want to go there. He even pointed out the 15-time PGA Tour winner had wet eyes. After that, they did what they practiced as Nantz said, “Chairman, it’s that time,” to start the ceremony.
The great dream of the two eventually after 15 years was a truth of life that the golf world has known till now. Even after 33 years to that Master, Jim Nantz and Lance Barrow have a fresh memory of it. Did you know about the duo’s history? What are your thoughts on it? Share with us in the comments below.
