LIV Golf guys play in majors, but it depends on their past performances. It’s always a challenge for so many of them to qualify. They know this now, but when the league was started in 2022, they did not. Eugenio Chaccara, who was recently released by Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs GC, opened up about how the trust of the players was broken.

“When I joined LIV they promised OWGR and majors. But it didn’t happen. I trusted them. I was the first young guy, then the others came after I made the decision. But OWGR and majors still haven’t happened. I saw you last year when they pulled the bid. It’s frustrating, but I’m excited for the new opportunity and to see where my game takes me.” he said in an interview with Flushing It Golf.

LIV Golf’s fight with OWGR is a known tale. 54-hole and team format have always been the hindrance, until last year when Greg Norman withdrew the application he had submitted to OWGR. He informed the players, and well, they must have been taken aback. The PGA Tour Pros get to represent their nation and play the prestigious Ryder Cup. LIV golfers can do it too, but the chances are really slim because of the qualification criteria.

Brooks Koepka did it in 2023 since he won the major that year, Bryson DeChambeau may do it since he won the US Open in 2024 and performed well in the Masters and the PGA Championship. You get the gist, right? It’s all connected. Eugenio Chacarra is still just a kid in the game. However, if he continues playing for the league, he will never really get the chance, and he does not wish for that to happen. He called out LIV for being money-oriented too.

“I see what it’s like to win on the PGA Tour and how your life changes. How do you get major access and ranking points? On LIV, nothing changes, there is only money. It doesn’t matter if you finish thirtieth or first, only money. I’m not a guy who wants more money. What will change my life is playing in Hawaii and qualifying for the majors, qualifying for the Masters, the Ryder Cup.”

This is a strange thing if you ask us. His plans to rejoin college in 2022 fell through when he earned a hefty check in Bangkok. But now, money is not his primary motive, that too is just when his career has begun. He now wants to fulfill his dream of getting a Tour card. This will also help him get the recognition he wants, which he did not get on LIV.

Did LIV Golf's promises of majors and OWGR points mislead young talents like Eugenio Chacarra?

Have an interesting take?

As it turns out, being a LIV Golfer has been a pain point for a lot of other players too. Initially, the promises felt real but with time, it all started to feel fake.

Carlos Ortiz shares frustration for not getting OWGR points

“They [LIV Golf] said that we were going to get them,” Carlos Ortiz stated on an episode of The Subpar podcast in February 2024. He highlighted that the league and its players still “haven’t got them.” Sharing his perspective further, the 32-year-old emphasized the caliber of LIV Golf players, saying, “People have to recognize that there are good players here [LIV Golf].”

He elaborated on the need for fair representation, adding, “If you’re going to have a world ranking that includes all the best players, you have to have some people included in that world ranking.” Interestingly, a tweet shared by Flushing It echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the Saudi-backed league for failing to deliver on its promises to players.

LIV Golf has not taken sufficient action to address the issue, pointing to the circuit’s current pathways and player rotation. These aspects were flagged by the ranking body in October 2023, when they decisively rejected LIV Golf’s bid for OWGR recognition. In 2023, the OWGR stated that they would not be giving out points to the league because it does not abide by the conventional rules of golf. They also added how the pros were not competing at a place where the ranking can be one equitably with other leagues.
