Sunday last week marked a great day for Jason Day. After all, his 5-year winless drought on the PGA Tour ended! Day’s last victory was at the Well Fargo Championship, back in 2018. Since then, he has been unable to find his way back, narrowly missing out on victory multiple times! Finally, on Sunday, he was able to pull out a magnificent 9 under in the final round of the AT&T Byron Nelson to grab the top spot.
The win was unquestionably emotional for the golf pro, and it was followed by a speech that reflected just that! Tearing up after clinching the victory the that 13-time PGA Tour winner made an honest confession!

The 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson event ended on Sunday with Jason Day taking home the title and a whopping $1,710,000 of the total $9.5 million purse. The win certainly meant a lot to the former World No. 1. Especially since his path to finding victory once more hadn’t been easy.
In the press conference after the final round, Day revealed that there was a phase in his life when he was very close to quitting the game. He claimed that he had never shared these thoughts with anyone, not even his wife: “I never told my wife that, but I was okay with it, just because it was a very stressful part of my life.”

The golf pro added that his wife was his rock. She never gave up on him, always pushing him to be better and return to the winner’s circle. And emotional after his heroic victory, Day claimed that he was having a hard time believing that he had finally found his way back to the top.
“It feels strange to be sitting here. I don’t know how else to explain it. To go through what I went through and then to be able to be a winner again and be in the winner’s circle is very pleasing.”
The golfer revealed that he a lot of hard work had gone into trying to be better on the course. Overall, he was overjoyed to see the result of his hard work finally pay off. “It’s nice to be able to get my 13th win,” he stated, blissfully.
Jason Day pays tribute to his mother moments after his win
Having clinched victory on Mother’s Day, it was only logical that the pro remembered his late mother along with thanking the mother of his children, his wife, Ellie Day, for her support!
The golfer’s mother passed away last year after a long fight with lung cancer. And the Australian golfer revealed that she was on his mind the moment he grabbed the win.

“I was in tears for a little bit there, and to think about what my mom went through from 2017 on to her passing last year and then to know that — it was very emotional to go through.”
Now a two-time AT&T Byron Nelson winner, the golf pro opened up about the tough times he’s faced in the past, both mentally with his battle against giving up and physically with the injuries he’s suffered. He was more than that; his resolve through it all had paid off.
