Max Homa has been having one of the worst seasons this year. At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he finished in the last position but still advanced to the BMW Championship, where he finished in the 33rd position. This ended his FedEx Playoffs for the season. Although Homa had accepted the defeat of not being able to play the Tour Championship, he knew there was something more important coming up.
Max Homa was chosen by Jim Furyk for the Presidents Cup as part of the USA team despite his terrible performance in the second half of the season. He knew he had to change something about his practice ahead of the tournament in Royal Montreal. Well, that’s when he decided to part ways with his favorite swing coach, Mark Blackburn.

Mark Blackburn and Max Homa started working together after he shot 78-76 and missed the cut at the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot. They met in a hotel gym that Saturday for a physical assessment of the American golfer. And since then they have been together. He stated that after such a long association, Blackburn is like a family member. However, sometimes communication becomes a problem. He also added that although Blackburn is an exceptional coach, no one knows Homa’s swing better than himself.
“It’s one of those things, more for me I need a break and sometimes I don’t do a great job of taking ownership of my golf swing so kind of putting the ball in my court a bit, and you know, trying to figure it out myself,” he said. That is why he is trying to take up ownership of his game. He has been at home after the BMW Championship doing setup changes and working through his new routine. “Just like I said, time away, it’s tough when you have a week at home and you know you have to get ready for a tournament because you can spend a day or two fiddling,” added Homa.

However, he is not completely alone. As Homa added at the Royal Montreal post-round presser on Wednesday, he often sends videos of his swings to a friend. He has been playing a huge role in checking ball positions, distance to the balls, and other things that are part of the golfer’s swing. But it is needless to say that with Mark Blackburn, Max Homa did achieve some of his greatest accolades in golf.

Max Homa won his first-ever PGA Tour title in 2019 at the Wells Fargo Championship with three strokes. However, in 2020, he was struggling to make it even on the Tour. He had missed six events in the nine appearances that he had made in the first half of the season. Winged Foot was his sixth missed cut. However, as he started working with Mark Blackburn after the 2020 US Open, things started to change for him.
The American professional went on to bag five PGA Tour titles from 2021 to 2023, which included signature events like the 2021 Genesis Invitational and the Wells Fargo 2022. He also won his one and only DP World Tour title at the 2023 Nedbank Golf Challenge by a whopping four strokes. While he was training under Blackburn in 2022, he made his first debut on the US Team at the Presidents Cup. This bagged him the best position on the OWGR list in his entire career, fifth.
