In case you missed it, Sam Burns has got a new haircut. Like Ryder Cup, the five-time PGA Tour winner is once again sporting carved initials with a side-swept. But not just any initials. Apparently, the 27-year-old lost a bet with Justin Thomas and had to etch “RTR” on his sides.
Burns and Thomas are both at the La Quinta for the 2024 American Express. Although Justin Thomas has been paired with Rickie Fowler and Burns with Erik Barnes for the first round, neither of the two has forgotten about the bet in November. Notably, both teed up for the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas last month. But American soil was perhaps their preferred place to flaunt the ridiculous haircut.
Did Sam Burns lose a college football bet?

Justin Thomas posted on his Instagram handle a selfie with his buddy Sam Burns. The 27-year-old has a side swept, with “RTR” etched on his sides. Thomas captioned the Instagram story, “I love your new haircut @samburns66 [Sam Burns]. For sure didn’t lose a bet and did it on your own RTR.”
The bet is likely about the LSU-Crimson Tide college football game that took place in November last year. In an earlier interview with Golf Week at that time, Burns said that he and Thomas had been talking about the game all week. “There’s been many comments exchanged,” revealed the five-time PGA Tour winner.
In fact, Matthew Travis of KPLC7 News also opines that the bet was about the college football game. Notably, Justin Thomas is a graduate of the University of Alabama. Whereas, Sam Burns, is an LSU alumnus. In the November duel, the Alabama Crimson Tide walked all over LSU comfortably netting a 42-28 victory.

Assumption would be in regards to the Alabama LSU game in November, which Alabama won 42-28.

For Burns, though, this shouldn’t be much of a concern. The Shreveport native is used to crazy haircuts. Previously, the LSU alum sported another ludicrous, side-swept style to show his patriotic support.

Sam Burns went ahead with a haircut with USA initials curved on his side-swept. At that time, the five-time PGA Tour winner revealed he asked his friend to do that. His friend used a razor to carve the letters. Not just fans, but his fellow Ryder Cup teammates also chimed in with their own quips.

Wyndham Clark commented on the video, “Last minute captain’s pick for Team USA… Joe Dirt”. Brooks Koepka joked at the press conference, “’USA’ doesn’t look the best, but it makes it even better, I think. It definitely classes it up a little bit.” Probably the hairstyle will receive more limelight once Sam Burns tees off at the 2024 American Express on January 18. Justin Thomas, arguably, has done a much better job.
