Tiger Woods and John Daly have maintained a close friendship ever since they began competing on the PGA Tour. However, there have been a few incidents on and off the field that have provoked the other golfer. As it happened, Woods once had to apologize to Daly after he questioned the latter’s use of a golf cart during a tournament at the Bethpage Black golf course.

How did Tiger Woods irk John Daly?

During the 2019 PGA Championship, John Daly was authorized to use a golf cart for movement around the Bethpage Black course. The then 53-year-old had mentioned he was suffering from arthritis following a number of surgeries.

“My knee is screwed,” he said. “I had the meniscus cut out. I have osteoarthritis so bad… I can walk up a hill. I just can’t walk down one.”

There was a mixed response to the decision – with some people arguing that Daly shouldn’t have participated because of his injury in the first place. When asked about his opinion, Tiger Woods had a one-liner at the ready.

“As far as J.D. taking a cart, well, I walked with a broken leg, so…” he said at a news conference at that time.

Did John Daly forgive Woods?

Speaking on the ‘Full Send Podcast’, Daly responded by saying the media had influenced Tiger’s statement. “Yeah, but he didn’t know the facts because the media, ‘the media’ (sarcastic gesture) didn’t tell him I had diabetes and I had a bad two knees and my hips out and all this stuff,” Daly said on the podcast.

“He apologized to me at dinner the other night. I mean, he’s fine. I love Tiger.”

Great to see the two getting along well together, Daly added that he was always close to Woods and was one of the first to check on Woods after the latter’s horrific car crash in Los Angeles in February 2021. Tiger had sustained serious damage to his leg and was feared not to play the game again.

“Look, I was the only guy that texted him going through all this. Besides JT (Justin Thomas) and a couple of other players, when he had that wreck, I was the first one to say ‘Hey man, get better and do good.’” Daly revealed.

The two continue to be good friends but rarely contest against each other. Woods is making a gradual comeback to the game after his injuries, while Daly contests in the Champions Tour, after losing event entries and sponsor invitations to the PGA Tour in 2016.
