Winners are winners for a reason, and Thriston Lawrence has proven it through his victory in Munich.

Lawrence ultimately gave his best performance and earned a one-shot victory for his fourth DP World Tour title.

How the victory came to pass for Thriston Lawrence

The odds were against Lawrence at the BMW International Open. However, the 2022 Investec South African Open Championship winner didn’t give up.

On Sunday, Lawrence had a rollercoaster ride. He shot five bogies but then he also came up with a whopping eight birdies which saved his day in the end.

He parred the rest of the holes. Joost Luiten, the favorite to take the trophy home at the end of the third round, couldn’t do much, if truth be told.

Lawrence got emotional after his victory and rightly so!

Coming into the tournament, he had struggled a lot. To make it more clear, he had not had any top-10 finish since December.

After the win, the 26-year-old addressed the media in the post-match press conference and spoke his heart out. He sympathized with his Dutch rival who eventually fell one-stroke short.

“I went to America for six weeks, made one cut. This game is not easy. It was a real boost and I really gave it my all. I feel sorry for Joost, I know how tough this game is,” the South African said.

Lawrence was thrilled with his Sunday’s performance, with the amount of ups and downs he experienced all through the day. “I played really well [on Sunday] and at some stage I didn’t think I was going to make a par; it was birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey – you’re just taking, giving, taking, giving,” he said.

How well did Thriston Lawrence’s competitor play?

Luiten stepped into the final with a three-shot lead. The Dutchman did well but not enough though. He missed a two-footer on 17. That was a crucial stage of the game and it made a big difference in the end.

Three bogies and just one birdie all through the day for him meant, Lawrence ran away with the winner’s spoils.
