John Daly is one of the strongest players on the golf course. Despite his personal and professional difficulties, he never gave up. Daly has bladder cancer. But fans can see a brave hero in him. However, he wasn’t the same always. He had major breakdowns, too.

There was a time when Daly was ready to give up. He wanted to quit golf and talked about his emotional time during an interview.

John Daly thought about quitting golf

In 2010, during an interview, John Daly said he didn’t want to play anymore. The interview was for a golf channel reality show named ‘Being John Daly’. Daly was upset because he could not make the cut for the Farmers Insurance Open. He was highly embarrassed, and giving up was the one thing he could think of.

He said that he was not the same as before nor he could not play like before. Taking spots from guys out there playing bad golf was not worth it for him. Daly said, “I’m tired of embarrassing myself in front of them (fans). I just can’t do it any more.”

Not being able to make it to the Farmers Insurance Open convinced him he did not want to play any further, as he felt did not have the required potential for the game.

The emotional times of Daly’s life

Daly’s thoughts about quitting golf were not the only time he broke down. He is infamous for his alcohol addiction but years ago; he was trying to overcome it. That effect was seen on Daly in 1998, during the Greater Vancouver Open at Surrey, Canada. He was struggling with alcoholism during those days. He broke down, cried, and started shaking at the 15th hole.

Daly was haggard and distraught. Without reacting much, he crossed his arms and walked around the green. Tears were rolling down his face, and his pain was visible. Corey Pavin was in Daly’s threesome, along with David Frost. He told the media that he gets these shakes now and then. Watching Daly suffer was hard, but he appreciated Daly’s efforts.
