Is Collin Morikawa's winless streak a sign of decline or just a temporary setback?

Like Scottie Scheffler, it is not easy for everyone on the PGA Tour to win multiple times in a single season. At least not for Collin Morikawa. Last year, the 2-time major winner broke his winless streak of two years at the ACCORDIA Golf Narashino Golf Club as he lifted the ZOZO Championship trophy. It was indeed a breakthrough moment for the 27-year-old, as he overcame his struggles on the greens and finally was the last one standing.

Coming to the 2024 ZOZO Championship, Morikawa shed some light on how he perceives his PGA Tour career and what he expects more to happen. The PGA Tour posted a snippet of the 6-time PGA Tour winner from the press conference in Chiba wherein he reflected on how his 2024 has been.

It has been exactly a year since Collin Morikawa’s 2023 ZOZO Championship, which marks the last time he ever won on the PGA Tour. Although he could not bag any events this year, it cannot be said that Morikawa’s 2024 season was disappointing. The 6-time PGA Tour winner came close to victory two times, once at the Memorial Tournament and again at the 2024 TOUR Championship; he was solo both times.

Not only this, out of the 21 events he had played so far, the 27-year-old missed the cut twice and posted 16 top 25s. Overall, Morikawa was only a few inches off from his two wins in 2024, but he has not lost hope, not yet. Talking about his season, he said, “I look back at this season; I haven’t won. I mean, I’ve had a solid year, but I haven’t won. I’ve got one more opportunity at that.” Hopefully, Collin Morikawa will use this opportunity to the fullest and turn out to be victorious from the ACCORDIA Golf Narashino Golf Club greens, just like he did last year.

Although Morikawa has been one of America’s favorites to represent at the Olympics or the Presidents Cup, the 6-time PGA Tour winner has yet to achieve the Sunday dream in the 2024 season. Coming at the Narashino Golf Club, just as Morikawa broke 2 years of winless drought last year, he is hoping for the same in this edition too. He returned from a slip-up in 2023 and even talked about it this year, reflecting on what it meant.

Collin Morikawa wants to end his 2024 season on a high note

Have an interesting take?

Recounting his victory at the ZOZO Championship in 2023, Morikawa expressed how it was his first win in 2 years and added that winning is tough no matter what, and you have to learn how to win, even though he got many titles early on in his pro career. He shed light on how it is tough to enter into the winner’s circle, and you really need to learn how to win.

He remembered his four rounds from 2023 and how he started with a great opening round of 6 under 64. However, he slipped 3 over 70 on the second but salvaged his game by posting 4 under 66 in the third round and “then ultimately played really, really good in the fourth round… Just being able to win again and being, you know, on top of that leaderboard at the end of Sunday, I mean that’s everything to me.”
