The Open Championship has its 150th winner! It is none other than the reigning Players champion, Cameron Smith! As a member of the PGA Tour, the American golf organization was proud that one of its players won the Claret Jug! However, the Tour would not be as pleased now that they know his stance on joining LIV Golf! 

“I don’t know, mate,” Smith said when one of the reporters asked him whether he would join LIV Golf or not during the press meet. “My team around me worries about all that stuff,” he added. “I’m here to win golf tournaments.”

The Australian professional golfer didn’t confirm that he would join the rival league. However, he neither declined it nor pledged allegiance to the PGA Tour.

Smith has been linked to the LIV Golf for a few months now as he was one of the golfers to play in the Saudi International Championship. Notably, the Asian Tour event is sponsored by PIF, the same Saudi government sovereign wealth fund that backs the LIV Golf events. With the uncertainty in his recent answer regarding the league, the speculations would only increase from now on! 

Cameron Smith was not pleased with the LIV Golf question!

“I just won the British Open, and you’re asking about that.” The current world no.6 was quick to express his rage when a reporter asked him about LIV Golf during the press meet for winning his first Open Championship. “I think that’s pretty not that good,” he added.

Notably, the R&A had chosen not to invite the LIV Golf CEO, Greg Norman, as they didn’t want to take away the spotlight from the major. The officials had also advised Phil Mickelson not to attend them for the same reason. 

Smiths’ first Open Championship win!

The 150th Open Championship is Cameron Smith’s first time winning a major title. And he had to battle in an intense round to win the tournament!

Smith entered the final round on Sunday as the T3 on the leaderboard. Moreover, he had a 4-shot deficit from the leaders Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland. However, his incredible 8-under par in the final round led him to win the event. Notably, his 20-under overall score managed to beat Tiger Woods’ 2000 Open record at St. Andrews by one shot.
