Patrick Cantlay's 'I don't care' attitude—Is this the key to handling pressure in sports?

When he was announced as a pick for the Presidents Cup, Si Woo Kim was asked what he would bring to the team. He said, “I want to give my energy to all the team’s players.” Kim has kept his word these last three days, bringing guttural roars, big fist pumps, and getting in the face of Worl No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Having played against him today, Patrick Cantlay made his feelings known about how Si Woo Kim went about his business, saying, “I don’t care what they do. I know they’re going to get amped up if they make birdies. They made a ton of birdies.” The pairing of Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim made six birdies in the afternoon session, while their opponents, Cantlay and Xander Shauffele made five. The Americans won not because of more birdies but because they didn’t make a single bogey, which the International pair made on the 13 hole.

The match was a fraught back and forth with leads being exchanged and birdies being celebrated by the Internationals uproariously. After chipping in from an upward lie in the rough beside the green, Si Woo Kim indignantly made a ‘good-night’ gesture to his opponents, but it was the Americans who bade the pair good night, winning the hole amidst a purple sunset.

Cantlay said of the incident, “I didn’t even know what the goodnight gesture was until about 10 minutes ago.” So, Cantlay was not having any of the Internationals’ antics and kept playing golf with fellow Californian Schauffele. Their focus paid off as they didn’t lose focus after the 13 hole and didn’t let the opponents get a lead. But where did that ‘good-night’ gesture come from?

The ‘good night’ aka ‘night-night’ aka ‘put the kids to bed’ taunt has gained notoriety in sports thanks to one of the best shooters in basketball, Steph Curry. Patrick Cantlay must not be a basketball fan because this is one of the most iconic celebrations/taunts in the game, which was also highlighted in the recent Olympics as Team USA won the gold medal in basketball.

The celebration is pulled out by Curry, especially after making a clutch point that gives his team a big advantage. As Kim did, he puts his hands together to his head and imitates falling asleep, implying the game is over. For Kim, though, the celebration was premature as the pair lost the match. Next, Si Woo Kim will be playing Keegan Bradley in the Sunday Singles and will be teeing off at 1:02 pm ET. Who do you think would lift the cup? Let us know in the comments below.
