‘I Could Take a Leaf From Her Book’: Rory McIlroy Once Gave His Ex-fiancee Caroline Wozniacki the Props Over an Inspiring Quality

Rory McIlroy had a tumultuous relationship with her ex-fiancee, Caroline Wozniacki. The Dane tennis pro dated the golfer from 2011 before the pair split three years later. However, the couple’s time together was a fun affair, with both admiring the other. McIlroy once gave out a hearty appreciation to Wozniacki, admitting he would have liked to have that ability as well.

In an interview in 2013, McIlroy revealed bits and pieces about his off-course lifestyle, which ultimately included the Dane superstar. The Northern Irishman talked about his then-fiancee and what qualities he loved about her.

Interestingly, McIlroy revealed the tennis star’s competitiveness when asked about his own. “No, I don’t think we’re too competitive,” he said. “I’m only that way with things I’m good at. Cards or pool, I don’t care, I’m OK win or lose. But Caroline’s got to win. I could take a leaf from her book. She’s stubborn. It’s a good thing.”

Indeed, the fire in Wozniacki was apparent in her game on the court. It took her to an impressive 30 singles titles, which includes the 2018 Australian Open Grand Slam title, a WTA Finals title, three WTA Premier Mandatory titles, and three WTA Premier 5 titles.

What really happened between McIlroy and Wozniacki?

The pair were together during McIlroy’s breakthrough patch in 2012, when he won his first PGA Championship. They were together for the golfer’s worst patch as well, but it was a different story altogether that year.

Incidentally, McIlroy had proposed to Wozniacki on a boat in Sydney Harbour on New Year’s Eve, presenting her with a £100,000 ring. The two were even planning on their marriage – their wedding invitations were already put to mail, before Rory backtracked after realizing he wasn’t ready.

The decision caused friction between the two, which eventually ended their relationship. Much later, Wozniacki revealed how the two broke up on a phone call after McIlroy had announced the decision in public. “It was very hard because he made it very public from the start,” she said on a TV show. “He put out a press release so I didn’t have a choice, you know, it just got put in my face.”
