LIV Golf emerged last year, and soon after, its feud with the PGA Tour began. Ever since then, both sides have made moves to strengthen their stance on golf. From increasing the purses from events to offering huge bonuses, the Tour has done everything in its power to foil the fast-building base that the breakaway league was creating for itself. And recently they’ve made yet another move, and the fans have seen Rory McIlroy back it completely. But this hasn’t left them impressed at all!

Golf World is infuriated by McIlroy’s words

The PGA Tour recently announced that there would be some changes to its 2024 schedule. Some events of its schedule would see both its fields reduced as well as the removal of the 36-hole cut. The events would see 70 to 78 players compete for the entire four rounds and have everyone receive a part of the purse.

McIlroy revealed ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week that he fully supported the Tour’s move on this. “I love it,” he stated. But the fans certainly didn’t. To them, the entire situation felt hypocritical, because this was precisely why the Tour and its players had shunned LIV Golf.

Fans also voiced their frustration with McIlroy, stating that this style of golf would be “more rewarding.” They were appalled by the Irishman’s words and believed that he was contradicting himself.

Fans even chimed in, adding that the PGA Tour was now copying LIV and that they perhaps even owed them an apology for all the insults that had been dished out to them in the past year for offering exactly what the Tour was now adding to their schedule.

Do you agree with the golf fans about the hypocrisy of the Tour’s actions? And do you think this is perhaps a win for LIV golf considering it is now being copied?

The 23-time PGA Tour winner explained that he believed the new no-cut events would make the Tour “more competitive”. The new format would see lesser players compete in the events, and as per McIlroy, this would bring out the best in the golfers considering they would have to fight to be in those top spots to play at those events. “I’m all about rewarding good play,” he said.

He added that with this latest move, the Tour had created a great product for the pros to see them immediately rewarded for their efforts. “It’s trying to get the top guys versus the hot guys,” he said. “You play well for two or three weeks; you’re in a designated event.”
