Action-packed showdown at Newport Beach Country Club

Padraig Harrington beat a challenging field to win the $300,000 prize money in 2024. He was closely being chased by veteran PGA Tour pro, Thongchai Jaidee and the Spanish DP World Tour legend, Miguel Angel Jiménez. This time around in the $2 million event, Harrington might struggle to retain his title due to a number of factors. His toughest challenge would come from Ernie Els, who has been in sublime form this year. Els has already won the 2025 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. He is also on the top of the Charles Schwab Cup leaderboard. Moreover, The Big Easy has actually won the Hoag Classic twice in the past. In fact, Harrington took the title from the 2023 champion, Els during his run last year.

Alternatively, the Irish legend will also be on the lookout for Bernhard Langer, Vijay Singh, and the man whom he beat last year; Thongchai Jaidee. All of them present a major threat to Harrington’s defense in 2025. Other two-time champions on the field like Fred Couples and Jay Haas will also be eager to win the title for the third time. And yes, John Daly will also be playing in the tournament. Interestingly, Jack Nicklaus will also be on the course as he will be joining in for the Hall of Fame Community Breakfast as a guest of honor.
