The PGA Tour may have wrapped up its season with the RSM Classic, but golf fans, don’t pack it in just yet. There’s still plenty to get excited about. Look no further than the DP World Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge, kicking off from December 5 to 8, 2024, at the legendary Gary Player Golf Course in South Africa. It’s not just another tournament—this is one of the biggest events in South African sports, and it’s bringing out some serious star power.
Back in the day, it was called the Million Dollar Challenge. Picture this: Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Johnny Miller, and Lee Trevino all teeing it up in the inaugural event in 1981. Fast forward a few years, and in 1987, Ian Woosnam made history by snagging the first-ever million-dollar winner’s check in golf. Not bad, right?
Last year Max Homa stole the show with a commanding four-shot victory. And guess what? He’s back to defend his title, teeing off at 11:11 AM alongside South African favorite Thriston Lawrence and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. But Homa’s not the only big name in the field. Will Zalatoris, Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, and other recent DP World Tour champs are also looking to make their mark.

What does the 2024 Nedbank Golf Challenge offer?
So, what’s everyone playing for? Well, it wasn’t called the “Million Dollar Challenge” for nothing. The purse of the 2024 Nedbank Golf Challenge is one of the largest ones on the DPWT. The golfers will go head to head for $6 million, with the winner taking home a whopping $1.025 million. And for the runner-up? The sum is a lucrative $665,000.
But there’s more to this tournament than just the money. It’s part of the DP World Tour’s Opening Swing phase, with the champion of that series being crowned after the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open later this month. And the winner here also gets a $200,000 bonus.

The champion earns exemptions into prestigious Rolex Series events and the Back 9 stage of the season, home to some of the Tour’s biggest tournaments. Throw in world ranking points, Race to Dubai points, and Ryder Cup points for European players, and it’s easy to see why this event carries so much weight.
In short, they’re playing for more than just a trophy. There’s money, prestige, and a chance to set the tone for the season—all up for grabs. So are you excited about the tournament? Let us know in the comments!
