After the last men’s major at the Harbor Shore Resort, the Senior Tour is ready for the 2024 US Senior Open. The tournament will be held at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island from June 27 to June 30.

An interesting fact about the venues of the US Senior Open is the fact in its 43 editions so far, it has been organized at 36 locations, with Saucon Valley being the only location that has had the honor of hosting it more than once. This would be the first time that the tournament is coming to Newport CC. Along with a good chunk of prize money which is $720,000 from $4 million, the winner will also get a beautiful and unique trophy from the USGA. What makes it unique? Its history!

While the U.S. Senior Open itself is a relatively young championship, having been inaugurated in 1980, the trophy awarded to its winner boasts a much longer history. The Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy, which is given to the victor of the event, is indeed the oldest one in the USGA. Ouimet, to whom the trophy was dedicated, was the U.S. Open champion in 1913 and a two-time U.S. Amateur champion.

The trophy’s journey began in 1894. That year, three clubs—Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Saint Andrew’s Golf Club, and The Country Club (now in Brookline, Massachusetts)—were invited by the Tuxedo Club of Tuxedo Park (New York, in the Ramapo Mountains) to face off in the first-ever American interclub tournament.

The Country Club emerged triumphant and retained the trophy until the mid-1950s. After that, the USGA Golf Museum kept it for exhibition purposes. At the beginning of the US Senior Open, with the suggestion of The Country Club, it was decided that the oldest trophy of the USGA would be used for the senior major’s formal award.
