Nelly Korda and Megan Khang: From rivals to best friends—does this make them stronger competitors?

With her remarkable talent and consistent success, Nelly Korda has ascended to the top spot in the golfing world. Moreover, her success on the course has opened doors to lucrative business opportunities outside of it. Megan Khang, on the other hand, has seen a similar height of success as she began golf as a child prodigy and developed into a powerful professional.

The two of them not only have played against each other many times over the course of their careers, but the two also share a strong bond of friendship that has sustained them on the LPGA Tour. However, things weren’t always this pleasant.

Both Nelly Korda and Megan Khang are extremely good golfers even when they were children. Korda, who was just 14YO at the time, qualified for the US Women’s Open in 2013, and Khang at 17 earned low amateur honors in the US Women’s Open in 2015 with a T35 finish.

In 2015, the two of them qualified for the Solheim Cup and were paired up. The bond of friendship they have now was cemented in that tournament. Khang helped Team USA win with her 5-0-0 record and winning meant that she and Korda were enjoying their time together.

In 2015, Megan Khang turned professional by finishing T6. While she proved her bright future with 17 cuts, Korda was still an amateur who recorded 7 top 10 finishes and earned her card to the LPGA in 2017.

In their first season on tour together, they would compete heavily with the best golfers in the world. With already a year’s experience on Tour, Khang quickly collected accolades such as making the most starts of any tour player. Korda, on the other hand, also shined. She had the second most eagles on Tour that year and had five top-10 finishes.

From then on, the two would become extremely successful and improve their game to the next level very quickly. Megan Khang would achieve her first million in earnings and Nelly Korda would win her first Tour event. They would then go on to play their first senior Solheim Cups.

After Nelly Korda turned pro, she joined her sister Jessica on tour and went about conquering women’s golf together. Megan Khang would often hang out with them, play practice rounds, and share houses with them. Together, they shared an interest in coffee. Khang was a coffee aficionado since her high school days and they started a coffee group chat. Later, Alison Lee and Patty Tavatanakit also joined in.

The group also usually gets dinner too. Korda has spoken previously about how close she is with Khang and Lee. Their usual places are family-owned restaurants where they “can look like where you can go in sweats and leggings and you don’t care how you look”.

Their deep and long bond was apparent as the two defeated Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire with an eagle to close out their day. Later the duo celebrated the triumph with a very ‘Disney Like’ handshake. When asked about it later, they explained saying, “Back to our Junior Solheim Cup days. Khang elaborated, “Nelly and I have known each other since 14, 15, and we have some funny stories. We just bonded well.”

From competitors to family on Tour, the two have come a long way. They have celebrated each other’s successes and supported each other through hardships, with many coffee cups and dinners. The Solheim Cup will surely be another great memory for them to remember down the line.
