Golf is played throughout various countries all over the globe. However, among many of those countries, Russia is not one. The game is not as popular in Russia as compared to other places. As a result, Russia has only a few golf courses.

How many golf courses does Russia have?

Although the sport is not that popular in Russia, it has grown considerably over the past years. Its first course was opened approximately 30 years ago, named, the Moscow City Golf Club; A nine-hole layout. One of the most recent ones includes is a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, called Raevo Golf and Country Club, outside Moscow.

However, it is not the only one in the city. Raevo is the third layout designed by the Golden Bear in Moscow. The first Jack Nicklaus designed course in Russia was the Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club. Moreover, it was opened in the year 2008, just outside Moscow.

Russia has a total of 32 courses. It includes a dozen of full-length 18 hole courses, as well as a handful of nine-hole courses. Just as the courses are coming up, some names in the sport are also making their presence felt. Maria Verchenova is one such name who appeared on the scenes back in 2016 at the Rio Olympics. Thus stating that the game is slowly growing in Russia. With the Golden Bear designing courses in Russia, we can soon expect a boon in the number of golfers from Russia as well.

Why is it tough to play in Russia?

One of the main reasons why the game is not so popular in Russia is its climate. The prolonged winter season makes it difficult for people to play on the courses. Apart from that, even the summer season is really short. However, if one wants to check out and play the beautiful courses, mid-May and mid-October is the best time.
