“Happy Valentine’s Day to my laundrywoman, barista, travel agent, #1 supporter, and fiancée. Life would be too hard without you!” The wise words of acknowledgement for the support system have been the key to the exceptional performance that we see at the course from the American professional. The 34-year-old, who has won one PGA Tour under his name, has been through thick and thin with his performance, but what sticks with him is Melody Spaun. The duo has been spotted together before they married, now that the family has grown, the golfer has got more supporters for him.
‘J.J.’ married Melody Means in 2019. But that was the time when the duo’s journey in their personal life moved to another stage. However, the timeline of their relationship and being supportive of each other goes back to their university days. They both met at the San Diego State University.
Even in his professional career, Melody has supported Spaun at events. She was first spotted at the Northern Trust Open (now the Genesis Invitational) in 2016. Later, the support extended as the pair welcomed their first daughter, 2020, Emerson Lili. The golfer even posted a photo on social media with her daughter and wife on Mother’s Day, writing, “Happy Mother’s Day to the best mom in the world! Thank you for all you do for our little family.”

JJ Spaun rule that helps in managing two roles
Juggling a professional golf career and family life is no easy feat, but Spaun has found a system that works. During the 2023 Tournament of Champions, while traveling with his family, he introduced what he calls the “five-hour rule.”
According to Melody, Spaun is allotted 300 minutes of practice time on the course. This structured approach helps him maintain a balance between his career and family. Reflecting on it, Spaun shared, “Maybe I should stick to it. Five hours of practice—OK, you get five hours. You have to be back by this time. Because sometimes, I can get stuck out here for a long time.”

While many professional golfers spend extended hours practicing, Spaun has found a way to be both efficient and present for his family. The approach has already shown results—at the ToC event, he carded nine birdies on the first day. And for the inevitable bad days, the couple has a contingency plan in place. Spaun admitted, “It’s going to be hard. But Melody said, ‘Well, yeah, if you start missing some cuts, we can adjust and add a couple more hours.’ This is how our marriage works. We keep things balanced—happy wife, happy life.”
Now, with the golfer performing well at the PLAYERS, we can expect a new photo of the Spaun family together and more information on the kids. However, it is still to be found out.
