The relationship between a pro and a rising star can define careers in ways often surprising. In the case of Tom Kim, the path to becoming one of the world’s most successful golfers is closely connected with the help and companionship of a senior, experienced player. This bond goes beyond the field and the game. The bond between the experienced successful golfer Scottie Scheffler and the young aspiring Kim started to develop last year.

They were born on the same date (June 21) and live in Dallas, Texas, only a few minutes apart, so their closeness was almost predetermined. The younger golfer has already established himself as a winner with multiple PGA Tour wins (2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, 2022 Wyndham Championship, 2022 Shriners Children’s Open) under his belt. Yet, the knowledge and company of his mentor that he has found is priceless.

“It’s been big. He’s a really good friend,” Tom Kim replied to the Jakarta post when asked about the effect of this friendship on his golfing career.

This companionship is not just for fun, it is for learning and experience. The young golfer sometimes consults the older pro on the psychological aspect of the game and appreciates the older golfer’s humility and openness. “I’ve asked him a million questions and he’s given me a million answers,” the younger golfer said. It was during a practice round at the Open Championship last summer that their friendship blossomed, evolving into regular practice sessions and profound discussions about the game.

Being neighbors and witnessing each other’s major life events like the birth of the older golfer’s son whom he lovingly teaches to call the younger golfer “Uncle Tom” deepens the friendship. Not only does this connection offer companionship, but it also gives an advantage over the course. The younger golfer summed it up well when he said, “I’ve gotten to like Scottie more as a person than a golfer”.

Building a Bond Beyond the Fairway ft Tom Kim and Scottie Scheffler

The bromance between these two golfers goes beyond the golf course. They are both Christians, and this has only strengthened their bond over the years. This spiritual bond with the common history and rivalry has produced a special connection. The first time the 22-year-old golfer played against his mentor Scottie Scheffler was at the Travelers Championship, where he pushed his mentor to a playoff, and this shows that the two are friends who also compete against each other.

Their interaction started with a request for a practice match but has grown into a deep friendship. The younger golfer added, “He’s one of the few people that when we’re at home, we still hang out and play a lot of golf together.”

This is because the mentor has brought out the competitiveness on the course while similarly encouraging the younger golfer off the course.

This relationship is a perfect example of how a young player can benefit from the help and advice of a more experienced one on and off the field. In your opinion, how will this particular mentorship affect the future of this younger golfer in the sport? Comment below!
