This particular Polish pro did not ask for motivation to defend his Irish Open title this week. However, he received it nonetheless. In his fight to keep his champion title at the K Club this week, he has a reason to perform at his best. And the name of the reason is Luke Donald.
European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald revealed his six captain’s picks on Monday, September 4. Expecting a call, the European Tour player waited for the captain’s call. However, the call he received did not go as expected. He was missing from the 12-player roaster. And among the many who were shaken by this was the English LPGA star Charley Hull, who was infuriated and publicly opened up about what he “deserved”!

The American and European teams will head to the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome during the last week of September. Both Zach Johnson, the American team captain, and Luke Donald have revealed their teams. But Adrian Meronk, the European Tour pro who did not make it, is vocal about it. And Hull also stands right there beside him.
The Ryder Cup is an event that marks national glory for whoever wins it. The fellow players who do not participate also want the best for their country. And Charley Hull is one of them. The LPGA star recently took to her Instagram stories to speak about the line-up for her country.
She wrote, “Defo deserved a pic in my eyes.” The story was a response to a post by Adrian Meronk himself. Bogey Boys Golf Podcast shared a picture of Adrian holding his last year’s Irish Open trophy. The in-text on the picture were words by Meronk: Yes, it’s been an emotional time for me, to be honest. From shock to sadness to anger, and now I am trying to turn it into motivation going into this week.”

The caption also revealed that Meronk currently sits third on the DP World Tour, behind Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. Adrian was quite sure about his chances at the Ryder Cup, and now the disappointment will fuel his game at the Horizon Irish Open.
The Polish star revealed that he felt it was also tough for Donald to deliver the bad news. But when he heard that he did not make it, Meronk stopped listening. However, that does not hold back his cheers for the team and their ultimate goal of getting the cup back from the American team.

There are two ways one can qualify for the Ryder Cup: either an automatic qualification or the captain’s picks. Before Luke Donald announced his picks, six players had already stood on six spots to complete half of the team.
Irishman Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, PGA Tour champion Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, and finally Robert MacIntyre occupied the six auto spots. And then Luke Donald announced his six picks.
The captain’s picks are Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Nicolai Hojgaard, Justin Rose, Ludvig Aberg, and Sepp Straka. It was surprising to see Donald choose Ludvig Aberg, the golfer who turned professional this June. However, Luke Donald seems sure of his choice.
