Change is constant, and while this may hold true for life, it now also stands strong for the sport of golf. Lately, the golf world has seen tremendous change. Earlier this year, the PGA Tour announced some changes to the events scheduled for 2024. The hefty purse tournaments, also called elevated events, would have no cuts after 36 holes. The PGA Tour has now taken that up a notch with its bold announcement.

Just hours ago, reports hot off the press confirming the same came to light. Igniting a lot of hypocrisy chants from the golf world, it is not just the fans who are upset by the news; the players themselves aren’t too pleased with it. One PGA Tour pro recently took to expressing his displeasure with it!

As per recent reports, the PGA Tour plans to eliminate the traditional cut at the halfway point and implement limited-field elevated events. Even though they’ve criticized LIV Golf in the past for exactly the same thing, the Tour has now allegedly adopted the no-cut format for its 2024 schedule. Unsurprisingly, among many who were triggered by this news, PGA Tour star Billy Horschel was among them.

Horschel has never shied away from voicing his opinion in the past, and this time he didn’t disappoint either. “There’s something about having a cut and have it mean something out here. You can tell from watching somebody what type of stones they have when they’re trying to make a cut, whether they care a lot or whether they throw in the towel,” he stated.

Despite missing nine cuts in 21 appearances on the Tour in the 2023 season, he still stands against no cuts. “You can get a good judgment off of a player if whether he has a chance on Sunday if he can get it over the line based off if he tries to grind out a tight cut. It shows the greatness of a player,” he added.

The Baton Boy is currently playing at the Wyndham Championship this week and is trying to make up for the missed cuts this year and secure a place in the playoffs.

However, even if he doesn’t, it seems like his stance on the alleged new format remains strong. And it is unlikely that he is the only one who thinks cuts are essential. Perhaps, others may join him, especially when many changes are underway for the PGA Tour. Earlier this week, the PGA Tour released a series of changes planned for 2024.

PGA Tour renames big-purse events now?

The big-purse events, a.k.a., elevated events, will be rebranded as ‘signature events’. The schedule is also designed around twelve designated events. These events will, just like the 2023 season, witness increased purses, but additionally, they will also see limited fields and no cuts.

The number of players in these signature events will be reduced from the normal triple digits down to 70–78. However, the majors, Players Championship, and FedEx Cup playoff tournaments will remain unaffected.
