Ryder Cup is all set to begin by the end of this month. The teams, American as well as European, are all fixed. Their 12-member squads are open for public discussions now. The selections were made by automatic qualifiers and by the captain’s picks.
It’s not uncommon for players and fans to have differing opinions on Ryder Cup selections as captain’s picks often involve a balance of recent form, experience, and other intangibles. There has been severe outrage since Europe captain Luke Donald announced his picks.

Joost Luiten is a Dutch golfer, ranked 20th on the DP World Tour. He was one of the committed golfers this season who showed exemplary performance with several top-10 finishes. In an interview with Golf Magic, he has spoken out loud about the picks made by Luke Donald, particularly with regard to Shane Lowry and Nicolai Hojgaard.
He believes that Shane Lowry was included in the European Ryder Cup team solely because of his experience and not because of his recent performances. Lowry has had terrible form this season with only one top-10 finish.
Joost Luiten also couldn’t hold back from expressing his surprise upon Adrian Meronk not getting selected over Nicolai Hojgaard. Luiten did, however, acknowledge Ludvid Adberg, saying he is a great contender and a truly deserving golfer to make it to the team.
Joost also showed the sense of optimism by praising the European team for its overall solidarity. It is rather surprising that Luiten himself after having an incredibly successful season on the DP world tour did not make it to the Ryder Cup team.
The Never Ending Controversies Around Captain’s Picks
Joost Luiten is not the only golfer to express his opinions on the selected golfers for the European Ryder Cup team. Earlier on Monday,
LIV golfer Richard Bland also expressed his opinions on the omission of Adrian Meronk in favor of Lowry. Also Read – Amid a Confounding Ryder Cup Snub, 3X DPWT Champion Blows Away the Golf World With His ‘Classy’ Gesture: ‘You Were Robbed’His argument being: Meronk has won on the course where the Ryder Cup is set to take place and has shown consistently good performances all through the season. Shane Lowry, on the other hand, has been struggling. The weightage given to experience was far more than the weightage given to the current form, it appears.
There are diverging opinions from all. Now it remains to be seen how the teams will perform at the clash of the titans in Rome from September 29.
