The answer to this lies in the rich history of a golf course for whose improvement two big entities have joined hands. A veteran LPGA star’s family owns this decades-old golf club.

The joint effort of the LPGA Tour and KPMG Golf toward the Clearview Golf Club

KPMG is the title sponsor on the LPGA Tour of one of five major championships — the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. This journey as the title sponsor started back in 2015 and has continued successfully over the years. Acknowledging the profundity of the sport, the $34.64 billion sponsor carries forth the LPGA Tour legacy of rotating the venues of the championship.

The recent tournament concluded on June 25 strongly at Baltusrol Lower Course with Ruoning Yin emerging as the winner. Now, after this successful major, LPGA Tour along with KPMG Golf has announced a brilliant new advancement in the field of golf. According to their latest Instagram post, both organizations will be working toward making an impact on preserving the Clearview Golf Club.

Consequently, the head professional of the Club, Renee Powell, expressed how proud she was of the organization (LPGA Tour). She has been part of the tour for over a couple of decades now. Additionally, the 77-year-old professional stressed how full of impact this venture is going to be. Furthermore, she focused not only on the footprint it will leave on the game but on society as a whole.

In accordance with the Club’s history, Powell said, “It’s about the past, present, and the future. If you don’t know where you come from, then you don’t know where you can go.” Hinting at the powerful past and the leadership of the course in East Canton.

The story of the struggle behind the Clearview Golf Club

According to Powell’s autobiography, the Clearview Golf Course got its name because of the striking visibility from the current 9th tee. As an answer to the discrimination he faced, William ‘Bill’ Powell turned his farmland into a golf course. It all started when Bill returned from World War II and was turned down from playing golf in his homeland.

This urged him to build the course with his wife Marcella by hand, a nine-hole miracle. It took a lot of hard work and smart financial help to convert Bill’s dream into reality. In 1946, this anti-racial course that welcomed “people of all colors” was called: America’s Course.

This beautiful and inspirational golf course opened its arms to the public in 1948 and finally stretched across 18 holes. Now, there are many modern facilities available at the Club. However, the joint collaboration of LPGA Tour and KPMG Golf is sure to bring in more development and upliftment.

In addition to its rich history, it also registered its name, as per the US Department of the Interior, as a National Historic Site in 2001. To further provide an insight into the management of the golf course, it is the only course built, owned, designed and operated by an African American. Currently, the Powell siblings look after the overall conduct.
