The aim of every golfer at any tournament is to emerge victorious at the end. But not every golfer is able to do so, as only one is able to do so after four days of rigorous golf. Every golfer wants to win at their country’s national open; after all, the win will be even more special at the home course with fans backing the winner up.

But it isn’t as easy as it sounds, says Rory McIlroy. Though the golfer won the Irish Open beautifully in 2016, he recently opened up about the hardships of winning on home soil, despite the numerous factors working in his favor.

McIlroy’s third day at The K Club was nothing less than spectacular. He shot an insane 6-under 66 on Saturday and now sits just 2 shots shy of Germany’s Hurly Long. The world’s number 2 golfer is at T3 with an overall score of 11 under. With his beautiful leader going in on Sunday, the chances of McIlroy winning are spectacularly high, but he thinks otherwise.

During the post-round media conference, an interviewer questioned him about his 2016 victory and asked him how much he could lean on the $6 million event. The golfer simply said, “It’s hard to try to win your own National Open and try to get over the line.”

The former World No. 1 reiterated that winning on home soil is hard, despite having tremendous fan support. He said, “It’s hard. It’s hard to do.” Reminiscing his iconic 2016 victory, the golfer said that he was “fortunate enough to do it a few years ago,” and those memories will always be nice.

Right before the Tour Championship, McIlroy hurt his back and was in tremendous discomfort on the course. So much so that it even raised questions about her withdrawing from the championship, but the golfer persevered through. At the Irish Open, the golfer faced less discomfort and pain, as his back has now been healing.

He said that in order to do so, he has to trust his skills, his swing, and his game.
