Feeling worse for a fan's ego than his own—Is Max Homa the most relatable golfer on tour?

Max Homa and shenanigans at the BMW Championship are an inseparable pair! Last year, his 5-foot birdie putt at the Olympia fields was interrupted by a fan yelling mid-stroke. Then, on the 17th hole, a drunk fan forced Homa to shout at him to clear the greens after a shot. This time, the drama unfolded on the nerve-wracking 15th hole during the penultimate round.

A déjà vu indeed. The 33-year-old golfer from California was already struggling at the 432-yard, par-4 hole. After two back-to-back bogeys on the previous two holes, just as he was preparing to putt on the 15th hole, the moment was disrupted by a scream from the spectator’s area— a chair had snapped and fallen. After the conclusion of the round, Erin Lopez, the spectator in question, came out with an apology for Homa and shared the reason behind her reaction on her X account.

Lopez wrote, “Sincerest apologies to @Maxhoma for the scream while you were putting on 15 today. Our chair snapped clean in half and the next thing I knew my boyfriend was on the floor.” The 6-time PGA Tour winner took the incident in stride, showing his usual sense of humor on social media when replying to the tweet. He ended up scoring another bogey on the hole.

However, for him, falling in front of a crowd is more embarrassing than carding back-to-back bogeys on the course. In response to this, he reposted the confession and made the perfect joke about it. “Haha I feel worse for his ego than my 3 putt so thank u for this,” wrote Max Homa.

Well, it is not unknown that Max Homa’s humor is widely appreciated by the entire golf community. Once again the comeback for the incident gave his fans a good laugh.

Have an interesting take?

The scream might have been a key factor in his bogey on the 15th hole; Max Homa remained calm even after learning the main reason behind the disruption. His drive landed in the right rough, leaving him in a tough spot among several trees. Despite the challenge, he overcame it with his exceptional putting skills, successfully finding his way through the difficult lie and reaching the green in two strokes. And instead of responding with anger, he chose to handle the situation with a lighthearted approach.

But it took him three more putts to land the ball in the hole. His second putt was a rather important 11-footer for par. Many of Homa’s fans blamed Erin Lopez’s scream for hindering his performance. One of them, taking to this, commented, “Hold your scream till after Max putts next time lady”.

Homa has not had a great end to the 2024 season. Since the PGA Championship, his best finish has been at the Memorial Tournament, which too was a disappointing T22 finish. Nonetheless, he managed to make his way to the top 70 and finally into Memphis. However, even at the St. Jude Championship, he found himself at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Homa shared a funny take about his recent performances on his X handle after the opening round at Castle Pines. The 33-year-old’s ability to turn a tough situation into a humorous one, earned appreciation from many fans as one said, “The people’s champion: Max Homa”. While another tried to establish that the scream did indeed have an impact on the bogey that he carded on the 15th hole, said, “Love this. That’s why you’re the fan favorite. But you need to at least acknowledge they were the reason for the missed putt!”

Despite making his way into the top 50 as well for the BMW Championship, Homa has been having a terrible run at the Castle Pines. He entered the Saturday field with a 74-75. Although he opened the round with a birdie on the front nine, the back nine was inaugurated with a double bogey. His score was 1-over 73, and he finished tying for the 45th position with Justin Thomas. Resorting to sarcasm, one of them stated, “Tough break… for the chair.”

Although Homa was aware of the scream at the GC on Saturday, had it not been for social media, he would have never known who it was. Taking to this, another fan simply commented, “Stuff like this is the cool part of social media. lol”.
