The Tour war in the world of golf seems to have no end in sight. The constant back-and-forth new measures taken by both PGA Tour and LIV Golf has got everyone on the edge of their seat. Though most believe the lucrative series stands taller when it comes to the source of funds, the PGA Tour commissioner believes his Tour’s “History and Legacy” is the core element in overcoming their rivals.

The PGA Tour will undergo some changes from next year onward. From a more exciting schedule to a higher tournament purse, the PGA Tour is set to begin a new chapter in its 92-year-old long-lasting history. Moreover, the Tour announced a new golf league, along with Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, which is set to commence in January 2024.

With the PGA Tour increasing its expenditure, fans began the speculation of a bidding war between the American Tour and LIV Golf. However, Jay Monahan, PGA Tour’s commissioner rejected the mindset and instead relies on a different analogy that will help his Tour in conquering their nemesis. Let’s take a deeper look at what Monahan had to say.

Jay Monahan said, “You’re competing for trophies that matter. You’re competing for history and legacy”. He then talks about how excited he is about the big three tournaments at the beginning of next year’s season will get the fans going wild.

He said, “But to directly answer your question, when you’re dealing with a non-economic actor, you have to come back to the core of who you are, and if the core of who you are is providing the single greatest competitive access and opportunities for players, and pipeline, then how do you make that stronger? And that’s what everything starts with”.

Though the newly founded LIV Golf may be able to sign some players for a 9-figure contract, it is quite apparent that they don’t have the history and legacy of their rival Tour. Being in the sport for 92 years, the PGA Tour has earned a reputation in the world of sports. Nonetheless, the question is, how long will the fans and players respect history and legacy over money?
