Marcel Siem had five European Tour titles to his name, but after claiming the 2024 Italian Open, the number has now increased to six. Interestingly, this might be one of the most anticipated wins for him, why’s that? Well just because of events that happened before he claimed the sixth title.
Last year, Siem won the Hero Indian Open and a few months after that, the golfer had to take a break. In February, he went through hip surgery which was necessary for him because of a lingering hip injury that he had been carrying for some time. Later, he shared a video on his Instagram account following the surgery and captioned the reason behind it.
It was Siem’s fourth start following his surgery. Before the surgery, he finished T23 at the Bahrain Championship. However, upon his return, things looked challenging. He missed the cut at both the Soudal Open and the European Open. Later, at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Open, he barely made the cut, finishing T51 with a total of 285, 3 under par.

As the golfer celebrates his win, the turn of events also includes a tense conversation with his caddie. Ahead of the final round, Marcel Siem was talking with his caddie about selecting the right club to make a shot. However, while doing so, they weren’t on the same page when it came to deciding the right club. Later he decided to go with his own choice to make the shot and it seems it worked for him.

Till the third round of the Italian Open, Siem was at T9, then what changed to grant him victory in the playoffs?
How did Marcel Siem force it to playoffs?
The first round started with 69 for the golfer. During that round, Andrea Pavan was leading the charge, and Marcel Siem wasn’t even in T5. Coming to the second round, there wasn’t any significant difference even after Siem finished with a 68. However, things took an interesting turn for him in the third round. The golfer shot 66 with 5 under par and was tied for 9th alongside Antoine Rozner. He carded four birdies in eight holes to climb the leaderboard, and a closing birdie brought him into a tie for the lead at -10, just one shot off the top.

It was initially Marcel Siem vs Antoine Rozner for Sunday’s final group. Later on, with the par three 8th hole, the 43-year-old German made an incredible shot, meanwhile, Rozner bogeyed 13 and double-bogeyed the 14th which granted Siem the top spot on the leaderboard. However, McKibbin finished final round 65 and stole the lead.
On the 18th hole, Siem made a crucial birdie putt of the back nine to force a play-off against McKibbin. After forcing it to the playoffs, the 43-year-old won in a dramatic fashion.
